Sports, religion, arts, and popular cultural expressions are explored. 13. Check the SLOs below that are focused on in the proposed general education course. 1. Demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of works in the arts and humanities. 2. Describe and appreciate works in the arts and humanities as expressions of individual and collective values within an intellectual, cultural, historical and social context. 3. SOL1 is addressed by students' exposure to a variety of African American arts: from poetry to contemporary music, students explore a variety of artistic expressions. SOL 2 is addressed by students' choice to pursue in-depth a particular artistic or intellectual expression and present their choice to the class --contextualized historically and socially. SOL 4 is addressed when readings on intellectual contributions are discussed and students choose to follow a line of intellectual thought to expand on its broader meaning for contemporary works. SOL 5 is addressed as students choose to create or perform an intellectual or artistic creation. SOL 7 is addressed when students write a term paper on an aspect of African American cultural expression. 15.
