We will never disclose information obtained to any third party without prior written instruction from the client. Resources The main sources for research are the Birth, Marriage and Death indexes, Parish registers and Census returns. There are many other sources that we use according to the individual circumstances, such as Military records; Occupational sources and Land Records. If you have a particular interest, such as an ancestor’s military service, please make this clear at the outset and we will do our best to find out what you want to know. How far back we can research The Domesday Book is one of the earliest public records where few people can find the name of an ancestor. Being able to trace your ancestral line down to the eleventh century is very rare. For example, there are 179 records for the name Hemming which appears in several different locations. King Edward had a thegn called Hemming, which accounts for many of the entries. For more information on the Domesday Book, or to see if your surname or village is listed visit: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/domesday/ Whereas we may not be able to research your roots to the eleventh century, we can often trace your ancestors back to the sixteenth century. In England and Wales most families can be traced back to the start of Civil Registration in 1837, many to the 1700's and some to the start of Parish Registers in 1538 and beyond. We would normally expect to trace the family line you choose back several generations, but every family is unique. The progress varies depending upon the survival of records, the frequency of occurrence of the surname and mobility of the family. Some families stayed in the same parish for generations, making the research easier, whereas others moved around frequently in densely populated cities. Some families left a better paper trail than others, being consistent in their occupation and precise with their documentation. It is for this reason that we cannot give an exact quote in advance for research, but we will keep within your agreed budget. In the unlikely event that we cannot find any information on your ancestors within the first hour of research, we will give you a full refund of your deposit. How long the research can take A full family history can take anything from a few weeks to a few months to complete, dependent upon the amount of research you want done, the complexity of the research, waiting for official certificates from the government; all play a significant part in how long the process will take. As the research is personal to each client, we undertake cases in the order they are received. Sometimes there could be a delay before we can start the research for you, but you will be informed of this when booking our services.
