Fear here is ‘phobos’…. or “ that which strikes terror“
Phobos is the Greek word we get our English word — Phobia. A phobia refers to a panic that is completely out of proportion to the perceived threat behind it.
The dictionary defines a phobia as-- An intense persistent, abnormal, and irrational or illogical fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid the feared stimulus despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous. A strong fear, dislike, or aversion. It is an exaggerated and often disabling fear usually inexplicable or baffling or incomprehensible or mysterious to the subject and having sometimes a logical but usually an illogical or symbolic object.
The Discovery Channel a while back did a story on the Top Ten Phobias that people have.
#10: Necro--phobia . The fear of death---they concluded that it causes some people to worry so much about dying that they have very little quality of life.
#9: ‘ Bronto —phobia ….. the terror/fear of thunderstorms.
One summer night during a severe thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small son into bed. She was about to turn the light off when he asked in a trembling voice, "Mommy, will you stay with me all night?" Smiling, the mother gave him a warm, reassuring hug and said tenderly, "I can't dear. I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence followed. At last it was broken by a shaky voice saying, "The big sissy!"

Humans are born with only two inherent/basic fears ? loud noises and unexpected falling! All other fears are learned or developed at some time in our lives.
God has not given us a ‘spirit of fear’ -----but rather He’s given us the spirit of love, power and ‘a sound mind’.
There are about 6 variations of the Hebrew word translated “sound mind” —it generally means –(to be) in control of your senses, to be sane, to be sober, to be temperate…. It speaks of one who is able to curb his desires or impulses. It speaks of a call to moderation and self-control.
LUKE 21:26 Men's ‘hearts failing’ them for ‘fear’, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
HEBREWS 12:26 Whose voice then shook the earth [Moses]: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
HEBREWS 12:27 And this [word], Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
Shaking-- to ‘cast down from your secure and happy state; to overthrow; to move, agitate the mind , to disturb… …… .and it’s only “ those things which cannot be shaken may remain”.
II THESSALONIANS 2:2 (I would …….) That ye be not soon shaken in “mind”, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
Various versions interpret this verse this way –

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University reported that 30 years ago, the greatest fears of grade school children were : 1)

The top 5 thing s today that kids are afraid of… 1) Divorce, 2) Nuclear war, 3) Cancer, 4) Pollution, 5) Being mugged or kidnapped.
Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin so feared for his safety that his residence in Moscow contained eight bedrooms---- Each night
Stalin chose a different bedroom at random to ensure that no one knew exactly where he was sleeping. The reason ..Fear!
During World War II, a military governor met with General George Patton in Sicily. When he praised Patton highly for his courage and bravery, the general replied, "Sir, I am not a brave man. . . The truth is, I am an utter craven coward. I have never been within the sound of gunshot or in sight of battle in my whole life that I wasn't so scared that I had sweat in the palms of my hands." Years later, when Patton's autobiography was published, it contained this significant statement by the general: "I learned very early in my life never to take counsel of my fears."
What is fear?
Number 1-- Fear is a perceived real, tangible experience for the humans that experience them, the origin of which you do not perceive that you are in control of-- fear does occur for most humans---- you simply wait for the precise circumstances to appear. You wait for the mugger; you wait for the rejection; you wait for the disease to establish itself in your body …………..

Second, “fear is a creation of the human mind. It only exists for the reason that you allow it to exist. If you allow fear into existence, then there is the provability that you are capable to determine for it not to exist.”
Charles Allen writes in his book “ Victory in the Valleys.
“5-year old Johnny was in the kitchen as his mother made supper. She asked him to go into the pantry and get her a can of tomato soup, but he didn't want to go in alone. "It's dark in there and I'm scared." She asked again, and he persisted. Finally she said, "It's OK--Jesus will be in there with you." Johnny walked hesitantly to the door and slowly opened it. He peeked inside, saw it was dark, and started to leave when all at once an idea came, and he said: "Jesus, if you're in there, would you hand me that can of tomato soup?"

9 After through the services of this week, trying to show people that there's no need of being scared. The worse thing the devil can put upon you is fear.
If you even had a cancer and didn't fear, and believed God would heal you, you wouldn't be in too bad a shape. God take care of that; if you were sick, whatever it is, if you didn't fear... So fear is one of the worst things that Satan can place upon the person.
In a little publication called ‘Today in the Word’, August 8, 1992. Black Bart was a professional thief whose very name struck fear as he terrorized the Wells Fargo stage line. From San Francisco to New York, his name became synonymous with the danger of the frontier. Between 1875 and 1883(8 years) he robbed 29 different stagecoach crews. Amazingly, Bart did it all without firing a shot. Because a hood hid his face, no victim ever saw his face. He never took a hostage and was never trailed by a sheriff. Instead, Black Bart used fear to paralyze his victims. His sinister presence was enough to overwhelm the toughest stagecoach guard.
Using fear to paralyze his victims---no wonder Brother B said “………fear is one of the worst things that Satan can place upon the person.”
There was a lady who died in 1916 name Hetty Green. She was called America’s greatest miser. When she died in 1916, she left an estate valued at $100 million. But she was so miserly that she ate cold oatmeal in order to save the expense of heating the water. When her son had a severe leg injury, she took so long trying to find a free clinic to treat him that his leg had to be amputated because of advanced infection.
What was her fear/phobia? She was worried about losing her wealth, so she didn’t even enjoy her life!!
FAITH.COMETH.BY.HEARING_ CHICAGO.IL SATURDAY_ 54-0320 He said, "Well," said, "the woman had been in the insane institution for ten years. And she..." Many of you that knows Romaine Redigar, was the same thing. And she was brought down at the house there, and she was delivered right there. The Lord Jesus healed her right there, and she's the mother of two children now. And that was Mother Romaine.

She had a phobia; when she'd get in her room, they'd turn her loose, she'd run jump through her windows, like that. She jumped out of a two story window and almost taken her life.

In Bro. Byskals testimony tape he was with Brother B a few days later and they ran into that young boy in a little diner and they talked and said the boy received his deliverance.
#1 -- fear is a curse!
Drs. Marilyn S. Cebelin of Cleveland and Charles S. Hirsch of Cincinnati concluded that “Acute stress can provoke changes in the heart that may lead to death”. The two doctors recently identified 15 cases in which people died after a physical assault, although the injuries alone would not have been enough to kill them. Eleven of the 15 cases showed a type of heartcell death called myo —fib--rillar degeneration, similar to a reaction in experimental animals who are helpless to anticipate or avoid danger.
It was both the mission and the message of Jesus Christ to deliver mankind from the slave ry of fear. That’s why the 2 words

Martin Luther in Table Talk. “ God and the devil take opposite tactics in regard to fear. The Lord first allows us to become afraid, that he might relieve our fears and comfort us. The devil, on the other hand, first makes us feel secure in our pride and sins, that we might later be overwhelmed with fear and despair.”
Fear will paralyze, and it keeps us from doing things we could do or should do or even want to do. Conquering fear is not a matter of self determination, it is a matter of total dependence on the God who has called us and redeemed us by His amazing Grace. It is a matter of belief in the Words of Jesus Christ and His promises to you. …..POWER, LOVE and
SOUND MIND.
Philippians 4:13 (NIV) I can do everything through him who gives me strength. That means anything God wants me to do, I can do it… I’m more than a conqueror thru Him that loved us.
