EMAIL IS THE BEST WAY TO GET AHOLD OF ME: Leave an email message on Angel REQUIRED MATERIALS FOR THIS COURSE Text: “Speaking with a Purpose” by Arthur Koch – 8th ed. **Daily access to a computer with Internet capability **Access to a video camera, a Video CAM, or a web cam to visually record your speeches and upload them to YouTube™. ** If these items are NOT accessible to you on a daily basis, it will be difficult for you to pass this online course. COURSE OUTCOMES 1. Aiding the students in overcoming speech anxiety. 2. Students will gain comprehensive knowledge of Public Speaking including theory, verbal and written communication nonverbal communication and ethics. 3. Students will gain techniques for developing effective listening skills, verbal and written communication skills, and delivery skills including the proper use of visual aids. 4. Students will gain the ability to apply the conceptual ideas of public speaking to practical situations outside the classroom. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Students are required to present five speeches during this summer quarter. Of those, three (3) will be informal speeches and two (2) will be formal speeches. Informal speeches include: a selfintroductory speech (written), student peer introduction speech (written) and an impromptu speech (a question/answer period at the end of your persuasive speech). Formal speeches include: a demonstration speech with visual aids, and a persuasive speech with visual aids. COURSE POLICIES Student participation is MANDATORY. You must post some useful information at least four (4) days in a week (Mon.-Sun.). It can either be a discussion that you start or a response to a discussion or question posted on the General Discussion Board or a response to an assignment. Be aware that Angel tracks each time you log in, so there’s no mistaking when and where you’ve been. If you miss more than 4 days of being on the boards (within this quarter), your grade will be reduced one (1) complete letter grade at the end of the quarter (unless otherwise approved by the instructor). Students must use their ANGEL email accounts within angel for this course. No home, hotmail, yahoo, or gmail accounts will be accepted. This not only assures your security, but will assure that your email does not get lost in the big junk mail bin in cyberspace. Anthony – 2 – summer, 2010 Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a very serious issue in this course. If you plagiarize, you will be given an “F” for the course. Posting your Speeches: For the speech portions of Block 4 & 5 (assignments 4.2 and 5.2), you must upload your speeches to YouTube™ then email me with link where I can view and grade them (Do NOT put a password on them). It is your responsibility to check your speech before uploading it to YouTube™. After you have uploaded your speech to YouTube™, it is your responsibility to check it on YouTube™ to make sure it works. If I open your speech and it is blank, you will receive a “0” for the speech assignment for either of those blocks. Late Assignments: ALL ASSIGNMENTS, SPEECHES and QUIZZES ARE DUE by THE DATE AND TIME LISTED BELOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE AND TIME UNLESS AUTHORIZED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. Sometimes, during the quizzes or exams, Angel or your ISP does time out. If this occurs, please email me ASAP. Angel shows all attempts, so if you’re late and thinking this will get the quiz opened for you, it’s not going to happen. Incompletes: No incompletes will be given for this course.
