Detailed Call for Papers Journal of International and Advanced Japanese Studies 2014-15 Introduction The Journal of International and Advanced Japanese Studies is published by the Doctoral Program in International and Advanced Japanese Studies, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Tsukuba. The journal aims to promote open debate through publishing the results of leading research in Japanese Studies. We welcome submissions from the perspectives of cross-national and international studies perspectives in all social science fields (encompassing politics, economics, society, media and information studies, culture, language and pedagogy, fine arts, and literature). We especially encourage graduate students (M.A. level and above) to submit manuscripts to the journal. Types of Manuscripts (1) Research papers (up to 20 pages) Empirically-based papers or theoretically-based papers in areas including international, comparative, or linguistic studies pertaining to research concerning Japan. Empirically-based manuscripts will be considered on the basis of their review of research topics from previous studies, examination by verifiable methods, and the presentation of results. Theoreticallybased manuscripts will be considered on the basis of their review of research topics from previous studies, theoretical examination and critical approaches to critique, analysis, and interpretation, and their contributions to new viewpoints and concepts in education or research. (2) Teaching innovations and practices (up to 15 pages) Perspectives including trends in research and actual practice, as well as recommendations for research. Innovative approaches to content-based and language-based instruction are welcome. (3) Research notes (up to 15 pages) Papers that describe groundbreaking and pioneering research activities, including new methods and approaches to theoretical research. Research notes should include the following features: (a) perspectives including trends in research and actual practice, as well as recommendations for research; (b) introduction of historical and factual materials that include discussions; and (c) descriptions groundbreaking and pioneering research activities. Manuscripts that discuss methodological approaches in Japanese Studies, particularly from an internationally comparative perspective, are also encouraged. (4) Review essays (up to 10 pages) Reviews of major works and current literature, including multiple book reviews focusing on a central theme within the broad field of Japanese Studies, are welcome. (5) Book reviews (up to 6 pages) Review of a single current work of literature in Japanese Studies. Reviews are expected to include placement within an appropriate subfield within Japanese studies, discussion of intended audience, and relevance to research and/or pedagogy within Japanese studies. 1 Eligibility to submit manuscripts Those who are eligible to submit to the journal are: (1) Faculty members affiliated with any university (2) Researchers, students, and short-term program students who are affiliated with the International and Advanced Japanese Studies Program or alumni of the program. (3) Other contributors as deemed eligible by the editorial committee. Both documents will be available on our website by mid-July 2014. Multiple submissions are allowed as long as the content and theme are significantly different for each submission. Manuscript Reviews Decisions as to acceptance, revision and resubmission, or rejection will be made by the editorial committee of International and Advanced Japanese Studies based on the reviews of double-blind referees. Publication Accepted authors will receive two copies of the volume. In addition, papers published in the journal will be stored electronically in the Tsukuba Repository (University of Tsukuba Library).
