Author: Bram Zaalberg Translation: Mirthe van der Spoel What is ADHD/ADD The abbreviation ADHD/ADD stands for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Attention and concentration: They find it difficult to keep their attention on the task at hand and to not let themselves be distracted by all sorts of stimuli from their surroundings. Hyperactivity: They are, especially at a young age, constantly moving. They are often easily excited and frustrated. Often they feel a great unrest on the inside. Keeping still and being quiet takes a lot of energy. Impulsivity: They act before thinking. They don’t take into account the consequences of their actions (not even unconsciously); the ‘break function’ is missing. Control functions: They have trouble planning; controlling their emotions, motivation and alertness. They also find it difficult to take into account previous experiences in their decisions and expectations about the future. Because of this they also react differently to reward and punishment. Characteristics of ADHD/ADD Children with ADHD stand out because they: • Have trouble sitting still • Are easily distracted. • Have trouble waiting their turn. • Run from one activity to the next. • Can’t play quietly. • Talk excessively. • Keep interrupting other people. • Don’t listen to what other people say. • Often rush into dangerous situations. • Have trouble following instructions. • React differently to reward and punishment. • Lose a lot of things or lose something often. • Have trouble focusing their attention. • Find it difficult to control themselves. Children with ADD stand out because they: • Are dreamers. • Seem passive. • Are withdrawn. • Are unorganised and forgetful. • Don’t seem to listen. • Often lose things. • Are easily distracted. • Find the social aspect in class difficult. 2|Page Internationale Kinesiologie Conferentie 2014 Children can also have a combination of ADHD and ADD. These symptoms correspond to normal childlike behaviour and therefore there is a great chance of a child being labelled “ADHD”. There are several circumstances that facilitate this “labelling” of children. One of the most important reasons, is that the ADHD label has to do with money. For instance, the financial support for students, and the medicinal solution that is reimbursed by health insurance. Dr. Jan Derksen, professor clinical psychology in Nijmegen: “All those labels are stimulated by the pharmaceutical industry. Because then people take pills more easily. But you have to take care not to burden your patients with the side effects of drugs.” “Teachers seem to be fixated on children’s disabilities. They want something to be done about it. Often this entails financial support, that brings in money. This way, labelling gets rewarded. That’s a dramatic development.” Psychologist drs. Laura Batstra got national media attention in 2010 by quitting her job at the youth clinic Accare. Previously she stated: “In the centre where I work for the moment, medication is the first advice in all cases of ADHD treatment. Parent training is only offered when that doesn’t help sufficiently. My problem with medication – beside the substantial fact that we don’t know yet if these drugs are harmless in the long-term – is that nobody learns anything from suppressing symptoms.” Batstra now works at the University of Groningen. The Trimbos institute states in her multidisciplinary guideline ADHD in children and youths: “Within the framework of ADHD treatment, several drugs have been researched. However, so far no drug has proven to be a cure.” According to Dr. Sjef Teuns, the first child psychoanalyst in the Netherlands and emeritus professor in psychiatry: “Drugs as Ritalin, Concerta, Strattera and Medikinet are hard drugs. These medicines should not be given to children.” 3|Page Internationale Kinesiologie Conferentie 2014 MATTHEW’S STORY: Matthew was a teenager who had been on Ritalin for seven years. In March 2000, he suddenly died. Even though he had no background in heart problems, the autopsy showed clear signs of damage to the small blood vessels. One of the medical examiners told his parents that the heart of a healthy, adult male weighs about 350 gram. Matthews heart weighed 402 gram. In his death certificated is stated “Death caused by prolonged use of methylphenidate (Ritalin).” Ritalin is the generic term for methylphenidate, which is classified by the American Bureau for Drug Enforcement Administration, DEA as a Schedule II narcotic – the same classification as cocaine, morphine and amphetamines. It is used by teenagers because of its stimulating effects. Even when Ritalin is taken as a prescription drug, it can have serious side effects, like anxiety, insomnia, anorexia (eating disorder), irregular pulse, heart problems and weight loss. According to the manufacturer, it’s an addictive drug. The active substance in Ritalin, the most used ADHD drug, is methylphenidate. It’s an amphetamine-like substance. It falls under the Dutch Opium Law, list 1. Uses medication for ADHD since the age of 7. Started with Ritalin. After 3 years he experienced so much anger and aggression that he received other medication on the side: an antipsychotic. The following years he changed medication several times because the symptoms only get worse and because he experiences more side effects. The side effects were fits of anger, no appetite, fatigue, sleeping badly and not doing well at school. He has always received treatment from a pediatrician since taking the medication. Used medication over the years: • Ritalin, ADHD medication. • Medikinet cr 30 mg, ADHD medication. • Concerta 36 mg, ADHD medication. • Risperidone accord 0,5 mg, antipsychotic. • Resperidone actavis 1 mg, antipsychotic. From 21/09/2013 he started using cell salts and flower remedies aside from the medication he used. He had already tried several times to cut down on the medication or to go off it completely but the days that he didn’t use any he would get terrible headaches, anger and concentration troubles at school and so he was afraid to stop it. This last period, using cell salts and flower remedies, has gone very well – less headaches and less anger. He already had more fun in doing something. We reviewed and let him hold the medication in his hands, that which he still used. He took the medication and you could see him turning completely white. He threw the medication on the table and said to his mother: I’m really not going to use this anymore because it feels creepy and weird. When taking the medication you could tell exactly what it did to his head. It was like his head was put in a bench vice. His grades were good and they had gone up from lots of fours and fives to eights, nines and tens (out of ten). His behaviour had improved a lot, he was much more cheerful and social. From now on he is allowed to step out of class to take his remedies because other boys often make silly jokes about it. He can give a sign to the teacher when he’s having difficulty taking a test because of the noise in class so that he may sit in the back. He did get itching from working with the pigs, in the same spot every time. Again the earth connection exercise and we looked at the energetic images and we did some dowsing. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) concluded in January of 2009 that drugs containing methylphenidate should provide the following information (shortened version by the author of this text): • The user should have a medical check-up for problems with heart and blood vessels beforehand. • During use, blood pressure and heart should be checked regularly. • There is little information about long term effects. Therefore the use of methylphenidate should be stopped yearly for an interim check-up and to see if continuing is appropriate. • Methylphenidate can be the cause of psychiatric disorders or of worsening of these disorders, like depression, suicidal thoughts, hostility, psychosis and mania. Continuous check-ups are therefore necessary. • Height and weight of the users of methylphenidate should be monitored.
