Miguel and Kayla decide to work part time for a cereal box making company. They want to make extra
money so they can buy a shiny unicorn and name it Princess.
The boxes are rectangular prisms and have the following dimensions:
12 inches high
8 inches wide
2 inches deep
Victoria Baden is the hard core manager. She is cracking the whip and demands a new size for the cereal
boxes. The new boxes have to be rectangular prisms. Miguel and Kayla are a bit flustered. They call in
Juan to help because if they can’t figure it out, someone is getting kicked and Miguel and Kayla voted it
would be Juan.
1. Calculate the volume of the current cereal box.
2. Determine the surface area of the box.

Hope joins the project management team with Victoria. Hope decides she will kick anyone that
calculates the wrong answer. To keep from getting kicked, figure out this problem:
-the new boxes have to use less cardboard than the original boxes.
-the new boxes have to hold the same or greater volume of cereal as the original boxes
Carl Brown and Dante think that a shorter box might be the answer. They would be easier to store and
transport. They proposed these measurements:
-10.5 inches high
-7.5 inches wide
-4 inches deep
Determine if the new box meets the new requirements. Explain using volume and surface area. Will Carl
and Dante be kicked by Hope? (Draw diagrams explaining the surface area and dimensions)
(remember, the old box is 12 inches high by 8 inches wide, and 2 inches deep)

Amaya joins the management team and decides to require ALL employees must design a new box that
meets the requirements or everyone will BE FIRED! Hope still wants to kick everyone, but Victoria Baden
thinks Amaya is onto something.
Keep from getting fired (or kicked) and design a new box for this company.
-give the dimensions of your cereal box
-explain how it meets the requirements to use less packaging than the old box uses
by getting the volume and surface area of the box and comparing it to the volume and surface
area of the old box
(remember, the old box is 12 inches high by 8 inches wide, and 2 inches deep)
BLUE: (Design two boxes that will meet these requirements)

thinks it’s pointless to have a sandbox outside because it becomes a giant kitty litter box and the 4 year
olds will be digging up more than sand…….
Anyway: Draw the locations the boxes with the given vertices IN ORDER: then name the shape

Tori, Dallany, Stefie, and Sapphira decide to sell Smurf figurines. They just received an order for a large
amount of Papa Smurf figurines from KJ, who demands his beloved Smurfs be packaged as indicated:
-His Smurfs must come packaged together in ONE large box
-each Smurf must be in its own box: 3.5” x 3.5” x 3.5”
Tori starts to panic because there are only 2 boxes to choose from. Stefie and Sapphira start to calculate,
and Dallany slaps Tori to ‘snap her out of it’.
Box A: 21’ long, 14” wide, and 24.5” high
Box B: 21” long, 21” wide, and 17.5” high
Which box should they choose if they want to fit the most Smurf figurines? Explain how you know which
one they should choose.
(Draw out the boxes and calculate the dimensions)
