The University of Bremen, Faculty 9: Cultural Studies, Department of Anthropology and
Cultural Research, invites applications for the following position within the field of Social and
Cultural Anthropology
Research Associate (100 %) (EG 13 TVL) – Postdoc –
for the duration of 3 years (with a probable possibility to extend for 2 further years),
starting as soon as possible – subject to the release of job funds.
The University of Bremen, a mid-sized university with 250 professorships and 19,000

At the Department of Anthropology and Cultural Research, research and teaching
focuses on a global anthropology of the contemporary world, involving transcultural
entanglements, mass media communication and digitalisation in an inter-/transdisicplinary
and international perspective. The new postdoc is expected to replenish already existing
priority fields of research (processes of transculturalisation, diversity cultures, media
anthropology / digital cultures and the anthropology of energy and resources) with a focus on
medical, political or environmental anthropology /anthropology of science, knowledge and
technology at the interfaces with social studies of science and technology (STS) and to
contribute to innovative approaches in naturecultures-research. Naturecultures serves as a
framework of shared sensibilities around the entanglements of humans with other species
and material objects. It questions the nature-culture binary so constitutive for Western
modernity and critically investigates the anthropocentrism of the social and cultural sciences.
The vacant postdoc position is expected to support the work of The Bremen NatureCulturesLab (http://naturenkulturen.de/) in research and teaching and by developing independent
new research projects in the fields of the anthropology of science, environment, medicine,
technology, economy and / or politics. The possibility for a habilitation is provided.
Tasks:
- Independent research, willingness to develop own research profile within the
research fields mentioned above, willingness to work on a habilitation or a major
second book in the course of the next 5 years
- Conceptual development and co-management of the Bremen NatureCultures-Lab
- Obligation to teach BA and Master students (4 hours weekly)
- Conceptualization of workshops /conferences and publications resulting from such
activities
- Giving support to the internationalisation strategy of the department
- Assistance in the development of the department’s research structure
Requirements:
- Very good Master degree in social / cultural anthropology, European ethnology, or
related fields
- Very good or excellent doctoral degree in one of the following fields: medical, political,
environmental or economic anthropology, social studies of science and technology,
anthropology of knowledge
- Broad experience with qualitative methods (ethnographic / praxeographic field
research), interest in further developing collaborative and experimental modes of
ethnography especially in naturecultures-research

Teaching experience, love for teaching and willingness to teach classes in German
as well as English
Excellent oral and written English skills -CEF Level C2- (excellent German is an
asset)
Outstanding capacity to organize and to work in teams
High commitment, reliable and careful style of work
