Guidelines for Writing Learning Objectives
Learning objectives: Must be stated in measurable terms, use one action verb per objective to specify what the learner will do to demonstrate the information
learned, and address one specific area of learning.
An example of a clear and measurable learning objective: At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to: "List two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
agents used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis".
An example of an unmeasurable objective: At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to: "Understand the use of anti-inflammatory agents used in
the treatment of arthritis."
Suggested Resource: Bloom’s Taxonomy, developed in 1950, has long been the standard used to develop measurable learning objectives, based on the
organization of thinking skills into six levels, from the most basic to the more complex. The original taxonomy has been revised, and the updated domains and
verbs are listed in the table below. Please Note: In the revised taxonomy, understanding is a level of thinking skills, but you must still use a measurable verb to
address this domain.
