MiraTEC Trim Receives ICC-ES Evaluation Report for Code Compliance
First and only wood composite trim to earn distinction
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – JELD-WEN announced today that its MiraTEC® Treated
Exterior Composite Trim received Evaluation Report (ESR-3043) from the ICC Evaluation
Service (ICC-ES), becoming the first, and only, wood composite trim to earn this important
third-party distinction. The report was achieved
following rigorous testing of key physical
property and performance criteria by ICC-ES. It
provides further evidence that MiraTEC Trim
meets strict requirements and technical standards
for critical building codes in residential and light commercial construction.
“In addition to receiving the ICC-ES report, JELD-WEN commissioned independent, thirdparty testing1 of competitive trim products, such as hardboard, oriented strand board (OSB) and
wood, to the property performance requirements of the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria (AC424).
The tests revealed these products cannot meet the performance criteria established in the
evaluation report,” said Peggie Bolan, vice president of sales, building products, for JELD-WEN,
manufacturer of MiraTEC. “Collectively, these tests demonstrate that MiraTEC is a distinctly
different exterior trim product with exceptional characteristics. MiraTEC is a truly unique trim
product because it is not wood, it is not plastic, and it is not OSB or hardboard. Yet, it combines
many of the most desired physical features and demanding performance attributes found in these
products.”

Architects, contractors, specifiers, building officials and others use evaluation reports to
provide a basis for choosing or approving products in construction projects under the
International Building Code® (IBC), the International Residential Code® (IRC) and a host of
other building codes.
“ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-3043 ensures building officials and the building industry
that MiraTEC meets I-Code requirements,” ICC-ES President Shahin Moinian said. “Building
departments have a long history of using evaluation reports, and ICC-ES operates as a technical
resource for the building department. Final approval of building products is always in the hands
of the local regulatory agency.”
ICC-ES, which is the United States’ leading evaluation service for innovative building
materials, components and systems, thoroughly examined MiraTEC trim for code-compliance
based on 12 physical property and performance criteria: thickness swelling, water absorption,
nail-head pull through, lateral nail resistance, modulus of rupture, hardness, impact, accelerated
aging based on percent thickness swell, accelerated aging based on percent strength retention,
weatherability of substrate, decay resistance and moisture content.
Beyond performance testing, AC424 was subjected to several public hearings by the ICC-ES
Evaluation Committee, which is comprised entirely of code officials. The acceptance criteria was
developed by ICC technical staff and took into consideration public comments from industry
sources, including Louisiana-Pacific, American Wood Protection Association, Composite Panel
Association, termite experts and others.
“Receiving the ICC-ES Evaluation Report offers another level of confidence to home
building and remodeling professionals that MiraTEC trim is manufactured to high-quality
standards and meets critical code requirements,” Bolan said. “We are proud that MiraTEC is the
first and only exterior composite trim to receive an ICC-ES Evaluation Report.”
