The Health Centre is located with the Counselling Centre on the main campus and is staffed by Registered Nurses, in
addition to the Counselling staff. The 2 centres share a receptionist, Ms Lina. A nurse is on duty in EYC during the school day and can
be found in the Office. Our nurses are Ms Karen Baker-Ho –head nurse, Ms Parvathi den Herder and Ms Suhada binti Mohd Tahar.
We would like to bring to your attention some information to assist your child in the school community.
CHANGE/UPDATE OF HEALTH INFORMATION





If your child’s health status has changed since enrolment and completion of the Student Medical and Health Record or the
last update, please inform the Health Centre nurses.
Telephone number changes should be communicated to Admissions office. This ensures we can contact you in an
emergency or when your child is ill.
If your child has allergies, asthma, and other medical conditions or had any updates of vaccinations, please update the
nurses to discuss a care plan.
For the nurses to give the best care we need as much information as possible. All information is kept strictly confidential.
Parents are welcome to view the health record of their child.
Student Medical and Health Records are available from the Health Centre and are on the school website https://www.gardenschool.edu.my/medical-centre/
ILLNESS & TELLING THE SCHOOL & NURSES
From time to time children will become ill and school is not a place for such children. When your child is sick please keep him/her at
home to allow him to rest and recover before returning to school. Children who become ill during the school day will be sent home
to rest & recover. Please collect your sick child promptly when the nurse calls. Nurses observe symptoms and provide nursing
interventions for symptomatic relief until a parent can consult a medical physician who can diagnose and prescribe treatment.
However, as a guide, a child with any of the following symptoms should stay at home:
 diarrhoea and/or vomiting
 severe coughs, colds or influenza
 Any infectious disease, eg. chicken pox, impetigo, hand foot & mouth disease, conjunctivitis.
o Any child with a contagious disease should remain isolated from the school until no longer contagious.
 high temperature/fever
o Any children with a fever should stay home, only returning to school when free of fever for 24 hours without the
aid of medication.
 untreated headlice
o Following treatment children may return to school. More information is available on the website.
Please call the appropriate school office (EYC, Primary or Secondary) before 9.30am on the first day of absence.
Please also inform the nurses of illness or injuries via the communication avenues below.
MEDICATIONS IN SCHOOL



No student should be carrying any medicines on them in school. The exception is reliever inhalers for Asthma, eg. Ventolin.
Ideally with a spacer.
All medicines required during the school day must be handed directly to the Health Centre nurse. These must be in the
original container, clearly marked with the name of the medication, student details and doctor’s instructions. A written
note from parent/guardian instructing the nurse to administer according to the doctor’s instructions will avoid any
confusion and possibility of an error occurring.
please see the Parental Permission For Administration of Medication form on the school website

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF SCHOOL
Sleep
Sleep is very important for all of us but especially growing children. Sleep impacts learning and the ability to cope with all the
challenges faced at school. Generally, at 3-6yrs children need 10-12 hrs sleep, 7-12yrs need 10-11hrs and 12-18yrs need 8-9hrs
sleep. Having a regular bedtime routine, starting as young as possible, and being gently persistent with this routine, will help ensure

sufficient and good quality sleep.
FOOD and NUTRITION
Breakfast
Many children are coming to school without having breakfast. This has a huge impact on their learning. You may have heard about
the numerous studies showing conclusively of the need for students to have breakfast every morning. In the past we had many
children with stomach ache in the early morning due to hunger. Please ensure your child has something to eat before school.
Balanced Meals
When preparing your child’s morning snack and lunch please do provide a balanced meal. Each meal should be 50% vegetable &
fruit, 25% carbohydrate & 25% protein. Fresh foods are superior in providing nutrients for growing bodies as opposed to processed
foods.
Drinking Water
In our tropical environment it is easy to become dehydrated. Thirst is already a sign of dehydration so students should be drinking
throughout the day. Please ensure your child has a drink bottle of water every day. The bottle can be refilled at school at the
drinking fountains. When drinking from the drinking fountain please remind them not to put their mouth directly on the spout.
See below for some guidelines on how much children need to drink each day.

BALANCE between STUDY and REST
After giving full attention in class, thinking and being active in school activities, students need to allow themselves some time for
rest. Resting helps the body to restore. It also helps the brain to file away new learning.
HEALTH PROMOTION ACTIVITIES FROM THE HEALTH CENTRE
Health Screening
In Primary school and EYC we conduct screening of weight and stature. The data is recorded in the student’s individual, confidential
Student Medical and Health Record to track the growth pattern. Group information is collated and tracked through the school to
inform and support the health initiatives in the school.
Immunisation Clinic
Each year the Malaysian government public health nurses will offer to vaccinate our 13 year old girls against HPV. We obtain
parental consent and conduct an information session prior to the first dose which usually takes place in September or October.
Each year we will have an outside provider to conduct an immunisation clinic on a Saturday morning to assist you to keep your
children’s vaccinations up-to-date.
Please check the newsletters for all the latest information.
