I AM WHAT I WEAR
Grade: 3
Lesson Length : 2 hours approximately
Concept: political science (civic role) using articles of clothing from professions as a teaching tool
Subjects: Visual Arts, Interdisciplinary, Social Communication and Writing
Objectives:
Student will clearly understanding role of social responsibilities and careers of
model actors in their lives.
1. Identification of different jobs or careers
2. Discuss what parents, relatives or friends do for careers
3. Identify jacket, hat or other clothing that indicates what their model does
4. Why is what we do important in society?
5. Discuss why our communities or societies are better for what we do
Lesson Plan
Title:
I Am What I Wear
Materials:
Five to Ten different pieces of clothing, hats or coats

Have the children bring in two pieces of clothing to describe
what a family member or a mentor would wear
Procedure:

Hook, teacher demonstrates the articles of clothing from different careers
such as fireman hat or jacket, policeman hat or jacket etc. and a model
citizen , fireman or policeman is asked to read to the class.

Students demonstrate each piece of clothing they brought to class

Students explain why they chose this article/s

Students discuss why these careers are important to society and to them

Each student will create a poster with magazine cut-outs with pictures of
people dressed for different careers

Glue the pictures in a circle making a globe, put the one most important in
the center
Materials:
The following will be needed for the project

6 to 12 articles from Teacher

2 articles from student prior to project

Glue stick for gluing pictures

Standard letter size paper

Picture cut-outs from magazines of people dressed for different careers
Accommodations:

ADHD child will be able to stand to do his or her work.

Writing disabilities will be able to use school laptop as needed

Left handed students will be supplied with left handed scissors as needed

What have you learned from this project?

Evaluation:
Discuss how careers are important for society and the world
Each poster will be evaluated for correctness
Assessment of the circle of careers poster will be graded for accuracy by the teacher.
State of Maine learning results A1,through A4 , student will demonstrate communication skills
and demonstrating effective learning in verbal speech and demonstrate behavior leading to
success in schoolwork. Working and defining interpersonal skills to develop proper
communication.A3,g demonstrating ethical behavior while working effectively with others, and
following established rules A3, h as the guidelines are followed.

Title: I come from where?
Grade Level: 5
Time: First segment – Discussion of project and introduction to online research: two 2 hours
Second segment – Sharing findings and discussion of findings: Approx. two 2 hours
Objective: Give students the understanding of the importance of family history

Identify their ancestors – track as far back to the ancestors who were immigrants to America (If
student has difficulty obtaining family information they can chose a celebrity or someone
famous in their home town.)

Make history come alive while connecting events in history with the migration of ancestors

Appreciate their culture origins and ethnic background

Discuss how the United States is a melting pot of all cultures

Lesson Procedure:
1. Hook, each student will have access to a model family tree of a noted celebrity to show
the format.
2. The group will create a family tree using the sheets provided. The first segment will take
about 2 hours to prepare the data.
3. Complete family group sheets after all the data is acquired.
4. An oral presentation of student’s findings will allow students to share and provide
reinforcement and learning in oral speech development.

Discussion: What have you learned from this project?

How is knowledge of someone’s family history important to society

How is each family lineage important to the making of the United Stated of America
Evaluation: Family trees and family group sheets will be evaluated for accuracy, completeness and
creativity.
Learning results of Maine Department of Education include E1, a demonstrating how to listen
attentively while others address the class. E1, b demonstrates effective verbal and non verbal
communication skills and a willingness to learn and E1, e demonstrate strategies to manage or resolve
conflict. Also student will demonstrate the ability to evaluate and analyze information to make an
informed decision on the outcome of the project.
Accommodations: Any child by law has access to special accomodations

Children with writing disability can use laptop for writing

ADHD child will be able to stand up to put together his or her family tree

Time: Segment A: one 1hour 30 min.
Segment B: two hours allowing glue to dry
Title: Exploring our Solar System
Plan Objective:
Give student clear understanding of our solar system model.
6. Location of and identification of planets and sun
7. Discuss possibilities of life on each planet
8. Identify Earth’s moon
9. Why is our moon important?
10. Discuss how is our world is better for space exploration?
Resources:
Use of Starry Night Software with a Smart Board

Navigation through space and up close look at planets

360 degree view of Milky Way Galaxy with discussion

Look at phases of Earth’s moon and discussion
Lesson Procedure:
1. Hook, student will see slide show display of solar system and will see a model of the
solar system. The students will then work with each other to create a Solar System
Model.
2.
Students will use tools to construct a map of the Solar System
3. Students will use cardboard to outline an elliptic in glue of each planet
4. Students will then lay twine along the glue leaving an area to place their planet
5. Students will place a picture of the sun in the center
Materials:
The following supplies will be needed for the project

1. Paper glue
2. Black Crate Paper or Poster Paper 14 X 20 inches
3. Light twine but any light twine or string can be used
4. Stickers or Miniature pictures of the planets even printed pictures
5. Glue stick for gluing pictures

Discussion:
1. What have you learned from this project?
2. Why is knowledge about the solar system important to society today?
3. Why is space research important today?
Assessment:
Models will be evaluated for accuracy and completeness, neatness. Students will be
allowed to write a short description of their work for assessment by teacher.

Accomodations:
Each student will be assessed and state learning results for the following.
All students will have access to proper accommodations.
1. ADHD children will be allowed to stand to do their work.
2. Writing disabled child will have access to school laptop or other computer.
3. Left hand students will have access to left handed scissors
Students will be able to keep or display their projects. It will be a model which they will be able to use
for future reference.
Starry Night software was referenced and is a reference for the lesson. This software however does
not have to be used. A different reference source can be used with overhead projector or smart-board.
State Of Maine Learning Results:
A3 The students will build interpersonal skills as they work on this model, having to show discipline
and etiquette toward others.
A3,c Students will work as a team in putting together their solar system model learning to work
together.
A3,h Students will follow established rules for following the system model as they work together to
construct their project.

B2, b Communication skills will be learned as they will be necessary performing research into the
planetary system.
B2, c Critical Thinking skills are bought to the surface and are enhanced when students have to
imagine what other planets could be out there and if they think life sustainable. Students learn to
think outside the box.
E1 Gains and applies knowledge across disciplines learning context and real life situations with or
without technology. Students gain knowledge of space , what we know and think and apply it to the
way we process our way of thinking.
