FERGANA ART FELLOWSHIP The Fergana Art Fellowship (Curating/Archiving) is a RM25,000 grant awarded annually to a Malaysian or Malaysian permanent resident interested in curating and/or archiving the visual arts. This fellowship aims to encourage research, fieldwork, and critical writing related to a proposed theme and project. The grants supports travel, curatorial/archival research, working with artists, collections or other collaborators to produce a publication and an exhibition at the end of eight months. Goals To support and invest in curatorial/archival research and critical writing as integral to art production and exhibition-making. To provide curators /archivists with a budget and concentrated time to explore and take an idea to fruition. To connect curators/archivists with other key professionals and thinkers for dialogues and feedback. Fellowship Period The fellowship period covers 8 months, from 1 November to 30 June, with the last two months allocated for developing a publication and exhibition. Programme Details: The applicant will be required to propose an area of interest and methodology for the project. The applicant will propose how the RM25,000.00 grant will be spent for the project. The applicant can propose location/s for research and fieldwork anywhere within Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah. The fellow will work closely with the fellowship advisor and the Fergana team for any support. The fellow can select one other advisor (curators, archivists, writers, academics, art historians, etc.) from any field to have discussions and dialogues with and who can contribute to his/her proposed project, writing and intellectual development. Any additional project development funds for the duration of the fellowship (other than the above) will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis with the fellowship advisor and Fergana Art. Publication and Exhibition The fellow will spend the last 2 months (May & June) of the Fellowship working closely with the advisors and the Fergana Art Space team to develop the publication and exhibition. The fellow will be responsible for producing one researched curatorial essay for the publication and other texts related to the exhibition. The exhibition will be held at Fergana Art Space, Georgetown, Penang. The fellow will engage in at least one public event during the exhibition. This can be in the form of a talk or discussion or workshop. Fergana Art will be responsible for the costs of the publication and the mounting the exhibition. Eligibility All potential and practicing curators/archivists who are Malaysian citizens or Malaysian permanent residents. Applicants must have graduated from an institution with at least a diploma or degree and possess at least 3 years of working experience in the visual arts or fields related to it. Background of the applicants can include: visual artists, art historians, art managers, academics, researchers, writers, etc. Application Applications are open from 1 May and close on 31 July of each year.
