Reabold Reporter MAY 2013 Farewell Everybody Hi Everyone, It is with sadness that I will say au revoir to the club as the Manager, but happily say that I will return to attend social events or a drink after Saturday Social Tennis. I would like to thank the Board for giving me the opportunity to be the inaugural Tennis Club Manager in Perth and for their constant support. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 3 ½ years working at the club and will miss it very much. It’s a wonderful club and it’s been very special meeting and getting to know so many lovely people. I have been fortunate to have been offered a job at Match Property Development Group in Claremont and start there on the 10th June. Thank you to everyone who phoned emailed and personally gave me their best wishes. Wishing you all the very best always Martina work, honesty and cheekiness. She mentioned the special place Reabold Tennis Club had in Richard’s heart and a tennis racket and wrist band were specials symbols placed along with the Polish flag, medallions and beautiful flowers during the service. Our thoughts are with his lovely wife Teresa who will miss him greatly. Board Change Due to Geoff Hodsons increasing international commitments Jane Glass has been replaced him on the Board as an appointed Board member. Geoff will continue to assist the club whenever he is in Perth, and we thank him for his excellent service whilst on the Board. Saturday Social The weather has been delightful enabling our Saturday social players to really enjoy their time on the court. Last Saturday play will be 29th of June. Vertimowing and coring will commence the following week. New Members The club is thrilled to continue to accept new members to the RTC family. Our new members since March 2013: Richard John Zarzycki By now most Reabold members would be aware that Richard passed away on Tuesday the 21st May after spending 5 of the last 6 weeks of his life in hospital. He was diagnosed with lung cancer about 8-9 weeks ago and went downhill very quickly. He had been generally unwell for the previous 12 months which was why we hadn’t seen him around the club as much as usual. Many Reabold members and friends attended his funeral which was held at St Cecelia’s Parish and then Karrakatta Cemetery on Tuesday the 28th May. His daughter Yolanta gave an amazing eulogy and praised her father’s loyalty, hard DAVISON-PETCH DAVISON-PETCH YOUNG ALLAN ZHOU BURGESS TAN JENKINS ROTS STEWART HARRY SOPHIE ELOISE KYRA DEREK SIAN KAEY-DEN LUCY FIONA JANICE MOD-JNR PARENT MOD-JNR JUNIOR MOD-JNR MIDWEEK JUNIOR JUNIOR MIDWEEK FULL Club Championships The recent championships had some great games, some entertaining games and some quick games, but all played in good spirit. Our “Spices of the World” night was enjoyed by nearly 70 members & guests who all feasted on a smorgasbord of dishes from around the world. We were treated to curries from India, Schnitzel from Slovenia, Chilli Con Carne & Taco Soup from Mexico a scrumptious Chicken Spaghetti dish from the deep south of Mississippi and much, much more. The vibrant social committee once again lifted the bar and should be congratulated for not only their culinary skills but their passion and commitment to our wonderful club. We all look forward to these functions which seem to get bigger & bigger!!!! Special mention must be made of Mariana Kaker who crumbed and cooked 60 schnitzels for the evening. They were absolutely divine. Mariana volunteered to help the committee with this function and for that we are extremely grateful. Thank you Mariana. Of course the night would not run as smoothly without all the extra help from members. As the saying goes “Many hands make light work”. The dishes seem to get washed and put away in a precision like manner!! Many thanks to all of those people who dug in and got the job done. What a great team!!! Comedic relief was provided by Wendy Dallas-Smith who definitely has a way with words. Her impromptu quiz created a great deal of laughter from the crowd. Good job Wendy!!! Our next social event is our Quiz Night scheduled for Friday 7th June 2013. This is one of the Club’s major fundraising events of the year and it raises much needed funds to enable the club to continue to be a great community facility. Book a table or join a table NOW!!! Pennant Report- May 2013 The winter competition has begun and teams have already played 3 rounds. Reabold is proving that many players are keen to play tennis all year round and we are fielding 22 Winter teams (Seniors, Juniors and Mid-Week) compared with 32 teams in Summer. It is a big growth area for our club which is very positive. A cross comparison with other clubs puts us in the top bracket with only Sorrento having more teams (25) while Cottesloe and Hensman also have 22 teams. The challenge now is to expand our teams into some of the evening mid-week times and also in the Sunday competitions where we have available courts for the following summer. Senior Pennant Report Reabold has fielded 5 Saturday Men’s teams and 2 Women’s teams this season and thanks to Nick Scriabine a Wednesday midweek Men’s team. As we have many of our juniors moving into the senior ranks and new players arriving at our club, this is a big increase from last winter. The Tuesday night training with Matt Holmes has again proven to be very popular and has attracted new members who enjoy this aspect of the club. It is too early in the season to make predictions about the finals as yet but all of these teams will be competitive in their divisions when at full strength. We welcome to the club the following new players who are all playing winter pennants: Tim Kelleher, Matt Gavshon, Felix Hoffman, Joe Parfitt, Trent Vivian, Kenton Prindle, Carlin Zoehrer, Kenji See and Shane Rogers. The beautiful little girls Makayla and Bethany Moylan were helping to collect balls whilst watching Dad, Joel, play in the Men’s div 3 final Midweek Pennants This season we have 4 midweek Wednesday teams, 1 Thursday night team and an inaugural Tuesday ladies playing a new 4 set format competition on the grass. Good luck for upcoming season. Sandy Clarke Midweek Pennant Coordinator Junior Pennant Report Reabold is fielding 8 junior winter teams which is the most we can accommodate on our hard courts. What a great result! We are also very happy to be one of 4 clubs fielding an Orange Ball team in the inaugural competition. This is due to the great work done by the coaching team at Total Tennis Reabold with our up and coming Hot Shot players. You can keep pace with all of the results by looking at http://comps.tennis.com.au. We welcome to the club the following junior players who are all playing winter pennants: Lucy Jenkins, Kyra Allan, Lavinia Rajan, Adam Kehane, Liam Hewlett, Kaey-Dan Tan & Stefan Biga Thursday Veterans Group Celebrations held on Thursday 23rd May to celebrate the 95th Birthday of the ageless Barney Richards. Barney still plays twice a week at the club and hasn’t even retired from his accountancy practice with still 45 clients. Also, where would we be without him on Saturday for our afternoon cup of tea & biscuits? Barney is indeed an RTC Treasure. Barney is seen here with his dedicated Thursday morning group of mates. Come rain, hail or shine will grace the courts. Saturday Junior Club There is no Saturday Junior Club until Term 4. Information will be sent prior to the commencement. Squeegees Special thanks must go to Claude Hayward who spent many hours replacing the rubbers, painting and repairing four of the squeegees that were in a bad way after summer. They now look brand new. Can all members and coaches help out by hanging them on the hooks provided after each use? This keeps them in good order and removes a potential safety hazard from the court area. Thank you. Total Tennis Some of our junior members have been selected by Tennis West to participate in the Super 10’s – well done to Emily Lind, Jess Matera and Julian Weber, Andrew Horridge, and Alex Melville. Simon Harper is also one of the coaches. This is a great honour for our kids. Matt was very happy to be asked to present the summer pennant winner awards at the trophy presentations and we wish all the winter pennant teams best of luck. All the Total Tennis programs are on the go and Matt, Simon and Narelle would be happy to help anyone looking for lessons or programs to join. Please contact Narelle on 0414 155 533 or email admin@total-tennis.com.au TOTAL TENNIS – HOTSHOTS GRAND SLAM SERIES IS BACK AGAIN Proudly Sponsored by the Matera Group Don’t miss your chance to compete in the most exciting tournament series of the tennis calendar. Michael Weir finished year 12 at Hale school last year and applied for a place with the global volunteering organization Lattitude. He was accepted which means he will now be going to Canada for 6 months to work at a summer camp as a counselor and outdoor education instructor. His placement, which is near Halifax in Nova Scotia, finishes at the end of October and hopefully afterwards he will have some time to travel around Canada and even the USA. Tess Inglis also finished year 12 last year and decided to embark on a gap Year. She is now volunteering in northern India where she is working in a local school and teaching English to the students there. Later in the year she will be meeting up with her older brother Tim Inglis who is currently playing tennis in Germany for 3 months and is on exchange with Felix Hoffman who we are very happy to have playing here with us at Reabold in one of our Winter teams. Felix has made the most of his time at Reabold and in Perth and it has been a pleasure having here. Angie Nathan has just left for Queensland where she will attend a tennis training center run by exReabold member Heino Kersten. She will be training hard and playing in lots of tournaments. We look forward to hearing how she is going. Hopefully she will be back next summer to play again for Reabold. Brooke Campbell was recently selected in the WA Pizzey Cup team. This was after being part of our winning the Girls Junior State league Team. Well done Brooke. Sarah Campion is spending her Gap Year working but is also lucky enough to be travelling Europe with her family and has tickets to Wimbledon and the French Open. While in the UK she will catch up with her former team mate here at Reabold, Jade Henke. Will Hann Will is a very talented left hander who has played at Reabold since October 2011 and has rapidly improved his game and CTR since then, currently ranked 11th in Australia and 2nd in WA for his age group. He is a regular tournament player and last year represented WA in the Bruce Cup. This winter season he is playing Boys 16 Division 1. He is coached by Simon Harper from Total Tennis Reabold and gives back to the club by helping at Saturday morning junior club. Harper and the team at Total Tennis. Claudie and Fernie have been wonderful supporters of the club and we will miss them all very much. RTC Website We would like to encourage all our members to view our website on a regular basis. It is updated regularly and you can keep up to date with what’s happening at the club. www.reaboldtennis.com.au Hi All My name is Will Hann and I turn 12 in June. I have been asked to write a story about my recent achievements in tennis. Just a week ago I filled in an application for a major sponsor, Head. They replied saying that they would like to sponsor me, so I am currently getting a lot of gear supplied for me. The Tennis West rankings site has also been updated and I am sitting on 11th in Australia for my age and 2nd in WA for my age. I started playing at the age of five and have played five seasons of pennants. I always try to get down to the courts daily for a hit or practice. I am currently coached by Simon Harper who has done a lot for me in the past two years.
