SHERBORN RECYCLING COMMITTEE Minutes of the 297th Meeting of the Committee Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015; Sherborn Town Hall 1. The meeting was called to order at approximately 7:00 PM. In attendance were members Carol Rubenstein, Charles Tyler, Ron Buckler, Andrea Brennan, Scott Embree and Karl Ludwig. Also attending was Eliot Taylor. 2. The December Meeting Minutes were approved with corrections. 3. Thank you’s were issued to: Karl for doing the December minutes Andrea and Charlie for their continuing attention to the Styrofoam Boy Scout Jack Whitaker for helping with the Styrofoam Andrea for loading the Styrofoam (yet AGAIN!) on her own into ReFoamIt’s truck Charlie for his continuing attention to the fluorescent bulbs and the rechargeable batteries and EVERYTHING else at the TS! Andrea for her continuing work on the welcome bin program Ruane and Father for taking food waste from Pine Hill Carol for doing *everything* else! 4. Budget. Carol said that she submitted the budget to the Town Accountant and BOS. Tonight she will need to go upstairs and meet with Advisory to present. Then on Jan 29 Carol will have an appointment with BOS at 6:15 PM. 5. Food waste dropoff program. Carol noted that at our last meeting we discussed drawing attention to our sign at the split by attaching balloons to it. But after the meeting, she noticed a garden with a whirligig and investigated the cost of a whirligig instead. They are longer lasting and have less waste. Carol bought two, planning to put one at on the sign at the Transfer Station, but found the sign was moved over to the side, not all that close to the barrels and the one whirligig set up at the split was short and small and not as noticeable as she had hoped. Therefore she decided that both should go at the split. However, now that the ground is frozen and she cannot get the pole for the whirligig that went down yesterday with the sign to go into the ground! Carol is leaving for 12 days on Friday; someone will need to take care of the sign and the whirligigs. Andrea took the whirligig and will stick it into the ground when it is softer. 6. DEP grant. Carol explained that she has not yet ordered more kitchen scrap buckets or pails with the $500 grant we received from DEP for a “Small Scale Initiative” that she had applied for last summer. However once we have both the SBA money (award ceremony scheduled for 1/12) and the DEP money we should have a good supply of equipment for people in the spring. 7. April meeting date. Carol noted that she will be out of the country on the second Wednesday of April. It was decided to schedule the April meeting for Monday, April 6. 8. Li Sulfate Batteries. Charlie pointed out that we’ve recently received some Lithium Sulfur Dioxide batteries (from rescue defibrillators) that cannot be recycled through our normal vendor. Ron will check with the Fire Department to see where they can be sent. Transfer Station issues: 1. Roof repairs to control building: Unfortunately the rippled plastic that Charlie set aside for the overhangs was taken by unknown persons. Volunteer roof repair may commence in spring using accumulated asphalt shingles. 2. Rats still seem to be under control 3. Scrap Metal Prices: In the summer of 2008 at the height of the market we were paid $250/gt. The low point was in November 2009 when we were paid $110/gt. Since then we exceeded that when we received $255/gt from June 2011-early Oct and as little as $150/gt (in Sept ‘12).. In September 2014 Matthew Applebaum from Framingham Salvage commented the markets are dropping, and as of December it continued to drop as we received $135 for one load and $120 for the next one. 4. Tonnage Report: TRASH: In Nov. there were 11 trips of trash to Millbury. In Dec. there were 11 trips of trash to Millbury. Tonnage for trash was up by 13.2 tons in Dec. PAPER: In Nov EL Harvey accepted 6 loads of paper. In Dec EL Harvey accepted 6 deliveries. Total tonnage from Nov to Dec went up slightly. COMMINGLED: In Nov ELH accepted 3 loads of commingled. In Dec they accepted 2 loads. From Nov to Dec tonnage went down by 5 tons. Computed rates for the fiscal year: Recycling Rate for the town in FY15 is now at 34.81%. Average monthly trash tonnage for the town for FY15 is 119.67 and last month it was 118.6, so that is up by 1 ton. Average MSW per household (hh) is 159.56 lbs. per month and is still projected to be a little less than 1 ton per hh for the year, but since we have business waste mixed in we really don’t know what average MSW per hh is. Average trash per person is 53.19 lbs. per month. Average recycling per person is 28.4 lbs. per month. ALL OF THESE NUMBERS ARE A LITTLE WORSE THAN LAST MONTH, PROBABLY DUE TO THE LARGE AMOUNT OF TRASH AND WASTE FROM THE HOLIDAYS. Recycle committee meeting CALENDAR 2nd Wednesday of month at 7 PM at Town Hall EXCEPT WHERE NOTED: Feb 11, Mar 11, April 6, May 13, Jun 10, Jul 8, Aug 12.
