Curriculum Map for English Language Arts

Grade 3
*Note: There are some standards that are more complex and broad. These will have to be taught continually from the beginning of the year through the end of the year. These standards will not be tested on Global Scholar until the last 6 weeks; therefore it is crucial that you begin teaching these at the beginning of the year. Also, you must begin reading books by the same author for students to be able to master RL 3.8.
The following standards are continual:
RL 3.9, RI 3.10, RF 3.3, RF 3.4, L 3.1, L3.1a, L3.2, L3.3, L3.4, L3.5
There are 6 Segments to teach all the standards for Reading Literature (RL), Reading Foundations (RF),
Reading of Informational Texts (RI), and Language (L). Each segment is designed for teaching a 6 week period of time using any resources you have available. Standards for Writing, Speaking, and Listening are not included on this curriculum map.
Segment 1 (First 6 Weeks) Standards:

RL 3.1 –Refer to the text explicitly by asking and answering questions
RL 3.3 –Describe characters in the story
RL 3.4 – Literal and non-literal language, determine meaning of words and phrases in text
RF 3.3 –Phonics and word analysis/decoding words
RF 3.4 –Fluency (accuracy and fluency for comprehension)
RI 3.1 –Refer explicitly to informational text to find answers
RI 3.4—meaning of academic and domain specific words
RI 3.7—Use illustrations and words to understand
L 3.1i –Sentences
L 3.1b –Regular & Irregular Nouns –teach pronouns too
L 3.1c –Abstract Nouns
L 3.2d –Possessive nouns and pronouns
L 3.3 a –Words and phrases
L 3.3b –Conventions of spoken and written Standard English
Segment 2 (Second 6 Weeks) Standards:

RI 3.9 –Compare and contrast in two texts on same topic
RI 3.7 –Illustrations to understand text
L 3.1d –Regular Verbs and Irregular Verbs
L 3.1e –Verb Tenses
L 3.1f –Subject verb agreement and pronoun antecedent
L3.5b – Real life connections b/t words and their use
L3.5c –Shades of meaning (eg. knew, believed, suspected, heard)
