Curriculum Proposals
ALPS099-Accelerated Learning Program, course change – S. Natale-Boianelli
The course alpha is being changed to ENGL and the last line of the description has been updated.
The pre-requisite for the course is Accuplacer placement into ENGL080, first-time student.
APPROVED
CRIM130-The Criminal Court System, new course – T. Innocente, D. Wyks
This course will fill a gap in the Criminal Justice program. We do not currently have a course
dedicated to the state & federal court system and levels. The course may also be of interest to
paralegal and business students. A committee member asked about course transferability and
articulation agreements with 4-year schools. Similar courses are offered at Stockton and
Rutgers. Course would probably transfer as a free elective. The pre-req. of “none” assumes
students test into college level, ENGL101.
 Learning Goal 8, “trail” should be changed to “trial”. Learning Goal 10: The word “be”
should be removed.
APPROVED
Technical Studies, A.A.S., program change – J. Taggart
Currently, the base program cannot be earned; students must select an option. The State requires
that base programs be earnable. The changes allow for flexibility of program course selections
based upon a student’s interest. Courses will be tailored to an individual’s
credentials/certifications. In the program description, “mature students” and “working adults”
were changed to “students” and spelling errors were corrected. Under the Humanities general
education requirement, “Refer to specific option” was changed to “General Education
Humanities course”. Under Social Science, the word “course” was added after “General
Education Social Science”. The changes to the program will take effect, Fall 2014.
APPROVED with changes made at the table.
AVIT135-Introduction to Unmanned Aerial Systems, new course – Taggart
Intro to UAS ran as a special topics course this semester with a lot of interest. The course
received local and some national coverage due to the recent selection of NJ as a UAS state. The
FAA will begin integrating unmanned aircraft into the national airspace by the end of FY15.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Link Assessment Strategies to the SLOs
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”
APPROVED pending receipt of updated syllabus.
AVIT185-Remote Sensing Using Unmanned Aerial Systems, new course
“Remote sensing” is the ability to determine info. about the earth without actually touching it.
Determining info. such as distance and dimension, scale and measurement, from a photograph.
This course complements AVIT135. These two courses will later become part of a certificate.
A committee member asked why the course is four credits vs. three credits. J. Taggart stated that
the course covers a lot of info. in comparison to other courses. There are no college guidelines
for determining credits—the department makes the decision.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Link Assessment Strategies to the SLOs.
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”
 Change Learning Goal #6, Obj. b. from “Take surface wind profiles….” to “Obtain
surface wind profiles……”
APPROVED pending receipt of updated syllabus
AVIT210-Private Pilot, course change - Taggart
The flight hours for the course are changing from 50 to 65 hours based on national averages for
students completing the private pilot training. The extra hours will provide a cushion for
students who need more flight training.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Link Assessment Strategies to the SLOs.
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”.
APPROVED pending receipt of updated syllabus
AVIT240-Instrument Pilot, course change
Flight hours are changing from 50 to 65 hours based on national averages. The course will now
include ground training, which was previously a separate course. In order to earn a license,
students must pass a written and practical exam. If ground training is separated from flight, there
could be a gap between ground and flight training. Combining the two into one course
eliminates that possibility and also allows students to have the same instructor. Course hours are
changing from 1-3-2  3-4-4.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Link Assessment Strategies to the SLOs.
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”
 Add Pass/Fail language from AVIT210.
 After discussion, it was determined that the pre-req. should read: “U.S. Citizenship, valid
private pilot’s license and a Class 2 medical certificate.”
APPROVED pending receipt of updated syllabus
AVIT280-Commercial Pilot, course change
Combining ground training and flight into a single course. Same rationale as above. Credit
hours are changing from 1-9-3  3-8-5.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”.
 Add the Pass/Fail language from AVIT210.
 The pre-req. should read: “U.S. Citizenship, private pilot’s license with an instrument
rating and a Class 2 medical certificate.”
APPROVED pending receipt of updated syllabus.
Professional Pilot Option, Aviation Studies, A.S., program change
Adding AVIT135, removing AVIT220 and AVIT260, and changing the credits for Commercial
(AVIT280) and Instrument (AVIT240) Pilot courses. Total degree credits changing from 64 
65.
APPROVED
AVIT101-Experiential Flight, new course – Taggart
Advisory board recommending having some limited flight experience for people who plan to
work in aviation fields. This one credit course will provide the experience for students who do
not intend to earn a pilot’s license but would like to experience flying.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Link Assessment Strategies to SLOs.
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”.
 Remove the word “it” from the last sentence of the course description.
APPROVED pending receipt of updated syllabus.
AVIT103-Simulated Flight, new course
This is a cost effective way for students to experience flight via the flight simulator. Students
will have a choice between Experiential and Simulated Flight. The course content will be the
same in both courses.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Link Assessment Strategies to SLOs.
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”.
APPROVED pending receipt of updated syllabus.
AVIT200-Aeronautical Skills, new course
This course extends a student’s flight training and is intended for those who need more flight
hours to complete any of the three flight training courses. Provides 15 additional hours.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Link Assessment Strategies to SLOs.
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”.
 Change third SLO from “Pass….” to “Sit for …”
APPROVED pending receipt of updated syllabus.
Air Traffic Control Terminal, A.A.S., program change
Adding AVIT135, dropping PHIL101. Adding a choice between AVIT101 and AVIT103. Total
degree credits changing from 64 65.
APPROVED
(Note: At 1:50 p.m., B. Heard left the meeting to teach a 2pm class. The meeting continued with
a quorum)
AVIT275-Fundamentals of Flight Instruction, new course – Taggart, Sanders-Rabinowitz
After a student earns a commercial pilot’s license they must accrue 1,000-1,500 flight hours.
The most common method for acquiring the hours is by becoming a Certified Flight Instructor
(CFI). Students must pass both written and practical tests.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Link Assessment Strategies to SLOs
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”
 The first SLO should be changed from “Pass….” to “Sit for….”
APPROVED pending receipt of updated syllabus.
AVIT278-Airplane Flight Instructor, new course
Demonstrate that they can perform and analyze flight maneuvers and procedures. Prepares
students to take the FAA’s Flight Instructor Airplane Exam and to deliver effective flight
instruction.
The Committee requested the following changes:
 Link Assessment Strategies to SLOs
 Change “Intended Learning Outcomes” to “Student Learning Outcomes”
