EUGENIO MARIA DE HOSTOS MICROSOCIETY SCHOOL’S ELDA PEREZ-MEJIA
RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ADMINISTRATOR
PHOENIX, AZ, July 17, 2014 – Elda Perez-Mejia, principal of Eugenio Maria de Hostos MicroSociety
School in Yonkers, NY, was recognized recently for her performance as an Outstanding Administrator.
Having worked for Yonkers schools both as a teacher and administrator in the district office for 21
years, 2014 will mark Perez-Mejia’s fifth year as principal at de Hostos. Under her guidance, the de
Hostos staff has cultivated a culture of highly motivated, entrepreneurial learners using MicroSociety.
When Perez-Mejia says “MicroSociety is all about the culture that students walk into,” she means it.
Stressing the inherent significance of each child being of equal value to one’s own child, she and her
staff have worked to foster a community of genuine connectedness in which students and staff
continuously grow together.
Named after MICROSOCIETY’S founder, Dr. George H. Richmond, the George Awards recognize
outstanding achievement of students, educators, parents, and community partners in real-world
learning. The George Awards were a major highlight of MICROSOCIETY’S 22ND ANNUAL NATIONAL
CONFERENCE, FRAMING THE FUTURE: THE GLOBAL CHILD.
About MicroSociety - MicroSociety believes that children learn best by doing. Its mission is to create

model is supported by 30 years of programmatic research, refinement, and implementation in
hundreds of schools and after school programs across the nation.
Unique in its programmatic breadth and depth, the MicroSociety model extends far beyond basic
economics education activities, a simulation, or a token economy. It educates the whole child by
improving academic achievement while addressing critical issues of self-esteem, personal
responsibility, social engagement, and 21st century skills development.
