INTRODUCTION In the rapid growing population in Nsuta Presby Junior High School, solid waste management is a key challenge facing the school. Ghana in general and Ashanti region in particular, the issue of collection, management and disposal of solid waste continues to feature prominently in major towns and cities across the region. The contamination of water bodies leading to the spread of water-borne diseases, health hazards such as odour emanating from uncollected and decaying garbage, air contamination, garbage-chocked drains and gutters, the plastics waste menace, irresponsible disposal of refuse in communities are some of the challenges this research seeks to address in Nsuta Presby Junior High School. Waste issues seems to be a boring subject not many get excited about; however its consequences if overlooked can wreck the health and existence of any well-meaning people. ”Managing solid waste well and affordably is one of the key challenges of the 21st century, and one of the key responsibilities of a city government. It may not be the biggest vote-winner, but it has the capacity to become a full-scale crisis, and a definite vote-loser, if things go wrong“.-UNHABITAT. It stated that a city that cannot effectively manage its waste is rarely able to manage more complex service such as health, education, or transportation. Solid Waste Management is defined as the direct generation, collection, storage, transport, source separation, processing, treatment, recovery and disposal of solid waste. It is a polite term for garbage management. It is a solution in response to the word’s stinking and escalating problem: garbage. GENERAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION Nsuta Presby Junior High School is located at the Ashanti region in the Sekyere Central district. Like all other large schools, Nsuta Presby Junior High School is experiencing a rapid growth. Its population increased from 100 to 120 students. Currently, 60 percent represent the females and 40 percent represent the male. This rapid growth is as result of the schools excellent performance at the BECE level, popularity in sports and games and available amenities. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY With the increasing student’s population on Nsuta Presby Junior High School campus, it is anticipated that solid waste generation would concurrently increase, thereby calling for a proactive approach to solid waste management. To shift from existing management practices to a more sustainable management system, it is critical to review the existing conditions and identify its associated problems and alternative solutions. This requires forward-thinking studies to tackle the potential challenges emanating from the voluminous amount of waste currently generated and that likely to be generated on campus with time. It is against this backdrop that this study has been undertaken to generally assess and propose strategies for improving on the solid waste management system on Nsuta Presby Junior High School campus. The study involved assessment of the adequacy of waste bins and a review of waste management practice such as, final dumping sit in Nsuta Presby Junior High School. STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES Share information and evidence on the state of Solid Waste Management with the schools authority including the whole communities. This would provide a basis for NGOs’ to engage and influence national and international sector role-players for policy and practice change. Obtain communities’ perspective as a basis for re-thinking existing perceptions and assumptions. Such information would also help to influence effective targeting of neatness on the campus. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY This study is expected to increase the knowledge and up to date information on Solid Waste Managementsystems and its adverse impacts on Nsuta Presby Junior High School campus. It will also serve as a working document to policy makers in the school and the Non-Governmental Organizations who may wish to assist the school in waste management system. The study will further serve as benchmark data for any further investigation, as a useful material for academic purposes, and as an added literature to the existing knowledge. LIMITATION They lack dumping site, where they use the back JHS 1 block to serve as a dumping site. Inadequate storage bins for collection of refuse. Poor knowledge about how to clean the environment clean. Indiscriminate littering of the compound by students and inhabitants nearby. Students’ inability to adopt change and Lack of environmental consciousness by students. METHODOLOGY The table below shows a summary of the methods used to achieve the objects of the study. STUDY METHODOLOGY ASSESSMENT OF ADEQUACY OF Inventory of waste bins (sizes and numbers) BINS ON NSUTA PRESBY JUNIOR Observation of daily volumes of solid waste HIGH SCHOOL in waste bins Sweeping of plots allocated to various houses WAYS OF WASTE COLLECTION ON NSUTA PRESBY JUNIOR HIGH Daily picking areas of the campus to various classes SCHOOL Abatements of punishments to students who litter the compound with extra duties to keep the compound neat and clean Brooms Picking sticks Cutlass and hoes MATERIALS USED IN THE WASTE Hand gloves COLLECTION Waste bins and baskets Wheel barrow Sweeping of various apportioned plots and picking located areas ACTIVITIES This activities are carried on twice daily This is done in the morning before class and after class (thus before super) Monitored by house parents, teachers on duty, prefects and seniors on duty EVALUATION OF WASTE Observations MANAGEMENT PRACTICES Informal interviews ACHIEVED RESULTS Transformation of the final dumping site into a pit for final dumping. Regular cleaning and picking of the schools compounds. Additional supply of dust bins as a result of the project carried out. Adequate education and sensitization to students about environmental cleanliness every Monday and Friday morning. RECOMMENDATION/CONCLUSION Following a thorough evaluation of the existing solid waste management system on OASHS campus it was observed that a number of waste bins were uncovered leaving the waste exposed to adverse weather conditions and flies. This was as a result of mishandling of the bins, in the sense that, the lids are always banged by users anytime they need deposit waste into the bin. To address this issue, the these bins need to be replaced with waste bins provided with push flaps to avoid the need to always open and close the lid of the bin. The use of tricycles for primary collection of waste from waste bins is suggested by the study to facilitate the transfer of solid waste, prolong the useful lifespan of bins to prevent the nuisance and fatigue students are exposed to during the transfer of refuse to the dumping site. In addition, the study suggests that, with approximately 9m3 of solid waste generated per day on OASHS campus, the bins at the primary collection must be emptied daily. This is to prevent accumulation of waste in the bins leading to students dragging bins on the ground exposing them short life span. Finally, waste storage bins are also recommended for each of the class rooms and vantage points of the campus to prevent littering and sign posts reminding students to keep campus clean and need to be strategically positioned at vantage points on campus.
