Blustery winds and spooky obstacles… do training opportunities get any better than this?
By Melissa Spell Deal
Another successful Sport Horse Versatility (SHV) Clinic was presented by Linda Hoover January 10-11,
2009 despite blowing wind and rainy weather! Blossom Ferry Farm and Victory Land Dressage were
honored to host this SHV clinic in the Wilmington, NC area. Participants were provided with an
opportunity to learn how to offer their horse the support needed on a spooky obstacle course enhanced
by Mother Nature.
It was Linda’s intent to teach horses how to respond positively to life’s challenges. The clinic included
riders and auditors from various towns in NC, including Kinston and Charlotte. Horse and rider
combinations honed their skills working obstacles and exploring exercises to help the horses adjust
comfortably to their circumstances, despite the apprehension and doubt of many onlookers. Riders
participated in a forum in which they learned supportive skills, helping build their horse’s confidence,
trust, and ability to experience calmness when faced with circumstances out of their comfort zone.
After several riders watched the first session, they whispered doubts on the sidelines that their horses
would be able to get near the course, never mind navigate it. A smiling Linda Hoover assured them that
bad weather and spooky obstacles made an opportune environment to work on their horse’s individual
fears and lack of responsiveness or understanding of the aids. In every ride, often to their surprise,
riders were able to reach a new dimension in their partnership with their horse. They participated in
private lessons and navigated an SHV obstacle course as a group, gaining refinement and lightness in
their performances, despite real life weather challenges (blowing objects and mushy footing). These
experiences were made positive by Linda’s leadership in helping to prepare the partners for life in and
out of the show ring.
In preparation for challenges of the new year ,which include the 2009 Pinehurst Schooling Show Sport
Horse Versatility class series, Saturday’s clinic was followed by a Mini Competition in which savvy
competitors vied for points through obstacles including a bridge, maze, unwieldy footing, and more. The
lessons and Mini Competition were held in a fun and friendly atmosphere filled with unique
opportunities to enhance the horse’s training. The smiles and laughter produced by the Mini
Competition did not change the fact that participating in the class led to clearer application of the rider’s
aids, improved comprehension of the aids by the horse, and increased precision by both. The riders
were ecstatic about their horse’s performances, and recognized that the knowledge they gained
improved many facets of their partnerships with their horses.
Winners in the Mini Competition included: Kriestin Kleinschmidt from Vass, NC, in first place,
followed by Blossom Ferry’s own Paige Simpson and Julie Taylor in second and third places,
respectively. All of the riders participating in the clinic gained valuable experience that will help their
horses succeed in life’s circumstances, even on a perfect weather day!
Fix- A-Test For Ride For Life
Ride for Life is a licensed dressage show sponsored by The Potomac Valley Dressage Association. This
unique event funds breast cancer research at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Center.
The group NC Caravan for the Cure is heading to this event in June. To meet the team’s goal of a
$25,000 donation, we are hosting on May 2nd, 2009 a Fix-A-Test, silent and live auctions and a BBQ
dinner. ALL proceeds will go to the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Center.
Fix-A-Test works by riding a dressage test of your choice, it is judged and scored. Immediately after, the
judge works with you to improve your score for 10 minutes, you then ride your test again in front of the
judge and it is re-scored. To sign up, fill out the entry blank below, mail it and your check to
Meredith Mannheim at 1904 Russell Dr, Raleigh NC 27612. Your entry includes one Fix-A-Test and
one BBQ dinner Ticket. Additional tickets may be purchased for the BBQ for $15 per ticket.
Held at 4275 Avents Ferry Rd, Sanford, NC 27330.
