Cavendish Cancer Care New Joint Chief Executive and Head of Fundraising Cavendish Cancer Care in Sheffield is looking to appoint a new Chief Executive and Head of Fundraising. The charity, established over 20 years ago, has a strong reputation within Sheffield, South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire and has a good network of supporters that we are looking to expand throughout 2013 and onwards. Cavendish Cancer Care believes that people affected by cancer have individual needs that cannot always be fully addressed by their health care providers and social support networks. People affected by cancer often feel a variety of emotions from fear, to anxiety, anger, depression and loneliness. We offer a place for people to go to talk, and someone to help them deal with the way cancer has affected them and their life. We provide a range of therapies designed to help patients cope with their situation, reduce stress and to find their own resourceful way of living with cancer. Therapies include counselling and other talking therapies, relaxation or stress reduction therapies, body therapies and specialist children’s or group work. We are at the forefront of our field, and are highly respected for our professionalism and model of care. Alongside traditional therapies we also provide complementary therapies, with a rigorous evidence based approach that has gained the respect of the mainstream medical professions. We see around 1500 patients each year, the majority of whom self-refer to the service based in Wilkinson Street near Sheffield city centre. We also have a number of contracts for services at hospitals and hospices. Our services are free to patients and their main carer. We receive very little NHS funding and are reliant on fundraising and donations to continue to provide our services. Turnover is typically around £550k, although this is becoming increasingly challenging in the present climate. We also have smaller programmes for Motor Neurone Disease and Cystic Fibrosis. Following the retirement of existing staff we are developing a change in management structure, and seeking to appoint a new chief executive who will also head our fundraising activities. We are looking for a strong leader with excellent promotional, management and networking skills to build on the success of our already well-established team. You will ideally be from a fundraising or management background with a similar target driven approach. You will have a proven ability to lead fundraising or generate income within an organisation. You will also have strong leadership and managerial experience and have the ability to bring together a well-established team in order to gain the best from them. The Role We are seeking someone who can make a real difference to our fundraising income, whilst also taking responsibility for managing the organization as a whole. The role will oversee a team of 2 long-standing fundraising staff who generate around £270k in a typical year. The new head will need to both manage the team to achieve more, and contribute directly to an increased total themselves, so that we are raising £360k or so from core activities each year. Inevitably future targets will be higher, and agreed each year. We envisage the role will be 60% fundraising focused. The role also includes overall responsibility for our finance and administration function (2 staff), including managing the charity to hit targets and operate within budget, and our therapy service (3 staff). In addition you will be the face of the Cavendish Cancer Care to our wider community, work closely with Trustees and the board, and help to establish our longer-term strategy. We are open to candidates from any background, but we anticipate a strong record in either fundraising or a management background with a similar target driven approach. We have appropriate arrangements in place to provide oversight of the clinical aspects of our therapy service, but you will of course have to be sensitive to the nature of therapy work, and of course identify clearly with the charities overall remit and mission. Activities The job will include working with trustees and colleagues to set overall strategy, budgets, implementation plans etc for the charity and reporting against them Agreeing a fundraising target and accepting responsibility for delivering this with the team. Personally adding time, skill and energy into new fundraising activities to directly contribute to our target. Also, using existing business and personal contacts to enhance our fundraising effort and income Managing and motivating our retained staff team in all respects in their day-to-day work and towards achieving outcomes and targets. Also engaging with therapists, trustees, volunteers and others to establish a ‘can-do’ approach that sees the charity take control of achieving targets and managing its own success. Supporting the staff team and assisting them in career development, skill and knowledge acquisition etc Looking at our present ways of doing things and suggest and implement improvements to make us more effective. Widen the range of our activities and introduce new ideas and fundraising approaches and activities Raising our profile outside of the Centre and finding new supporters, or strengthening relationships with existing contacts by active networking. Also representing CCC in a figurehead role at events and becoming the 'face' of the Cavendish in the business and local communities. Working closely with Trustees and reporting directly to the board and trustees on a regular basis. Appointment We are open to candidates from any background, but we will place strong emphasis upon A proven track record (or similar skill) in increasing fundraising and income streams Leadership and managerial experience of an appropriate nature with suitable evidence The ability to weld together a team of different skills and personalities, and foster self-belief and achievement Identifying with our mission and a sensitivity to the key issues involved An understanding of the charitable sector The appointment is envisaged as full-time, but we can be flexible about this for the right candidate. Salary is negotiable although, like any charity, money is a constant challenge. In addition to the core salary there will be a performance based bonus. Please advise present salary on application. The job description above will be refined and agreed in the light of the chosen candidate’s particular skills and background. Process The closing date for applications is 17.00 on Wednesday 10th April 2013. Interviews will be held in April with an appointment to be made as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates short-listed after a first interview will have an opportunity to meet existing staff. Candidates will also be expected to make additional presentations to staff or trustees. Covering letter, current salary and CV should be submitted to Jane Beatson at Cavendish Cancer Care, The Cavendish Centre, 27 Wilkinson Street, Sheffield, S10 2GB. Applications by e mail should be submitted to J.Beatson@cavcare.org.uk. Any queries should also be submitted to Jane in the first instance.
