CSUMB College of Business Faculty Research Fund Draft Guidelines February 7, 2015 I. Goals: The primary goals of COB Faculty Research Fund (COB FRF) are: A. To encourage faculty to engage productively in scholarly activities (e.g., traditional, practical, and pedagogical research and publications) in line with the CSUMB Mission and the COB Vision and Mission. B. To supplement funding that faculty receives from the University and external sources. C. To help COB faculty members to meet Academic Qualification/Professional Qualification (AQ/PQ) requirements for our AACSB accreditation efforts. II. Eligibility: All full-time (tenured, tenure-track and adjunct) faculty and three-year contract and above PT faculty are eligible to apply for this award. III. Funding Guidelines: A. Requests for scholarly support (traditional, practical, and pedagogical research and publications) approximately $3,000 per faculty will be considered for individual research project grant. The $3,000 mark is associated with international presentations, meetings, etc. whereas domestic presentations, meetings, etc. will require a lower amount. 1. If a research project is based on collaboration with other faculty within COB, individual faculty funding will be increased to $3,500 per COB faculty member to act as a special incentive for those who are willing to conducting joint research projects. These projects are limited to $7,000 per collaborative team. 2. Eligible scholarship for funding awards include: a) Discipline-based basic scholarship. b) Academic scholarship that contributes to new knowledge in a basic discipline or field and/or provides new insights into the connections between disciplines. c) This is primarily for academic audiences and typically results in publications in refereed journals, research monographs, scholarly books, and papers presented at academic conferences and research seminars. B. Requests for pedagogical academic scholarship support that results in an enhancement of classroom instruction. 1. This primarily results in textbooks, publications in pedagogical journals, written cases, instructional software, new courses, and papers presented at academic and pedagogical conferences. 2. Eligible scholarship for funding awards include: a) To be determined. C. Requests for practice-oriented scholarship support that improves business practice and better application of theory to practice. 1. This primarily results in publications in professional and trade journals, faculty workshops, and presentations and presentations at professional conferences. 2. Eligible scholarship for funding awards include: a) To be determined. IV. Faculty professional development: A. Pedagogical academic scholarship that results in an enhancement of classroom instruction. V. Typical professional expenses: A. Reimbursement for normal professional expenses such as books and membership fees will be limited to $750 per year. B. Attendance at required COB meetings, conferences, etc. will be fully reimbursed if faculty attendance is deemed necessary to pursue COB objectives. Attendance at these gatherings includes those where faculty members may not be actively presenting papers or talks but which is important to COB accreditation, assessment, etc. VI. Project/Activity Assessment Criteria: Proposals will be assessed by the COB FRF and will include the following: A. The quality (likelihood of acceptance at recognized conferences, publication in journals related to faculty disciplines, etc.) of the proposed scholarly work including its likely contributions to the literature and/or profession. B. The need for funding to successfully complete a project. C. The impact of the proposed scholarly work on COB's objectives (including, but not limited to, COB Mission, AACSB accreditation, AACSB faculty qualification requirements etc.). VII. Requirements if funded: A. Faculty members are required to submit a brief report (one page or less) at the completion of the funded activity/project and should be submitted along with the associated expense report form. This report should indicate how the funding supported faculty scholarly activities. This requirement need not apply to minor, normal professional expenses such as subscriptions, books and professional memberships. (Reminder: we need to create the Report form) B. Faculty members are expected make themselves available for presenting their work at planned COB research colloquia. VIII. Operational processes/activities: A. Proposals will be reviewed each quarter with the potential for emergency review meetings. B. Funding must be approved prior to all activities for which approval is sought. C. Unlike the CSU research grants/awards, COB awards will be distributed through reimbursement based on actual expenses. The application for funds and expense reports should not be submitted to committee members but shall be submitted directly to Elsa Johnson, Senior Budget Analyst for the COB. D. All funding requests are subject to the availability of funding and budgets.
