Petition completed 10-10-11 Connect Group: To be added once IGCC approves. Purpose/Charge of Interest Group: Desired output, outcomes or accomplishments for first year: PURPOSE/CHARGE: The members of the YALSA Lockdown Listserv (among others) are interested in creating an Interest Group under ASCLA to advocate, promote, and improve library services for youth who have been detained in correctional facilities of various kinds. DESIRED OUTPUT & OUTCOMES: The goal of this group is to increase the number of libraries in juvenile corrections facilities, increase the number of resources available to librarians serving these populations, and to improve the quality of library services for incarcerated youth. This group will focus on increasing the awareness of the need for services to incarcerated youth, solving problems inherent to providing library services to incarcerated youth, and creating resources for youth librarians working in juvenile corrections facilities, including advocacy, standards, collection development, continuing education, and policies. ANTICIPATED ACCOMPLISHMENTS The anticipated projects of this group are many, though they will likely take more than a year to accomplish. For our first year, members will create a program proposal for ALA Annual 2013, continue adding resources to our wiki, mobilize on plans to create a website for idea sharing amongst juvenile corrections librarians, and revise the standards for service to juvenile detention facilities (last revised in 1999). Other future projects include: Soliciting articles for national publication about topics pertaining to incarcerated youth; seeking out conference presenters to discuss challenges and solutions for working with this population on an ongoing basis; creating distance-learning continuing education opportunities for sometimes isolated youth prison librarians through a series of webinars targeting the needed skills for serving this population; creating a collection development resource with reviews that collects titles, and collates the special considerations that must be taken by juvenile corrections librarians when purchasing; creating an award or reading list for books of special interest to incarcerated youth; finding funding to increase the support for juvenile corrections librarians to attend conferences; providing programming ideas and resources that are specially designed for use with an incarcerated youth population; organizing tours of juvenile corrections libraries around the country, to coincide with annual meetings and conferences; collect and share information about funding opportunities for those serving incarcerated youth; and developing tools to advocate for increased services and intellectual freedom for this underserved population. The working title of this group will be Library Services for Incarcerated Youth, but there are strong feelings within the group that there may be a better name for this interest group, so settling on a name will also be one of our first priorities.
