Chemical Reactions – Endothermic and Exothermic
When the temperature of a chemical reaction decreases, the reaction is called an
endothermic reaction (more thermal energy is leaving the solution and going into the
breaking of chemical bonds). When the temperature of a chemical reaction increases,
the reaction is called an exothermic reaction (more thermal energy is being released
by chemical bonds that are being broken).
Today you will these 2 chemical reactions:
1. Baking soda solution and calcium chloride reaction
 Measure 10 ml of baking soda solution (liquid)
 Record its starting temperature
 Add 3 spatulas of calcium chloride to the baking soda solution (liquid)
 Record its maximum finishing temperature
2. Vinegar and Baking soda reaction
 Measure 10 ml of vinegar
 Record its starting temperature
 Add 3 spatulas of baking soda powder to the vinegar
 Record its maximum finishing temperature.
