Dogs should be vaccinated annually to protect
against infectious diseases such as parvovirus,
Leptospirosis and distemper. Diseases such as
parvovirus can prove fatal in dogs and Leptospirosis
can be passed from dog to human so it is very
important dogs are vaccinated regularly. Puppies
will start by having 2 vaccinations 2-4 week’s apart
dependant on their age.
Treating your dogs regularly to prevent flea infestation is
recommended. Fleas are intermediate hosts, which
mean they live in the environment i.e. your carpets and
only jump on to the animal when they want to feed.
Regular preventative treatment of you dog can prevent
your pet and also your house from an invasion of fleas.
In the hot weather we see many cases of dogs
suffering from heat stroke. Commonly they will
have an increased temperature, be panting and
generally unsettled, but this can become more
severe. Heat stroke can increase the animal’s
body temperature so much that in the worst
cases they can collapse, go in to a coma or even
die. Easy ways to prevent heat stroke are to walk
your dog in the evening when its cooler, offer
plenty of fresh cold water and do not leave dogs
in a car even with the windows open.
We advise worming your dogs every 3-4months against
roundworm and tapeworm. They normally ingest the
worm eggs from the outside environment or from
uncooked meat. Worming this regularly will ensure your
dog does not get a build up of worms in their intestines.
We also recommend using a wormer that treats for lung
worm, which is picked up when dogs lick or eat slugs and
snails. Remember some worms are transmittable from
animal to humans so you should always wash your hand
after handling your pet.
We recommend annual vaccinations for cat
tooprotect them from infectious diseases, most
commonly known to clients as flu, enteritis and
leukaemia. Kittens can be vaccinated from 9 weeks
of age and will have 2 injections 3 weeks apart.
We all try to protect our own skin from the sun
in the summer months, but were you aware you
must do the same for your pets? Cats especially
with white ears and white noses, and dogs with
white ears and pink noses are prone to getting
sun burnt. Regularly treating these areas with
pet approved sun cream can prevent them from
getting sun burnt over the summer months.
After regular exposure to the sun cats can in
later life suffer from cancer on the ear tips.
Regular application of sun cream can help
reduce the risk of this occurring.

Rabbits should be vaccinated against two infectious
diseases. Firstly Myxomatosis and secondly Viral
Haemorrhagic disease. The infectious diseases are
spread from rabbit to rabbit via fleas and or
contact. Both diseases can be fatal if contracted.
Vaccines should be given annually.
Rabbits, especially in the warmer months,
are susceptible to flystrike. This occurs when
flies lay their eggs on the rabbit, normally
around the bottom and tail area. These eggs
will eventually hatch into maggots which
start very quickly will to eat away at areas of
skin around the bottom and tail. To help
prevent flystrike we recommend more
regular cleaning of the rabbits living
quarters, twice daily checks of your rabbit,
checking for any fly eggs and cleaning off
any soiled areas. You can also treat your
rabbit with REAR GUARD. This product is
designed to repel flies and help protect
against flystrike.

hay and shavings will help prevent them getting mites.
We advise rabbit owners to worm their rabbits 2-4 times
per year against a parasite E cuniculi. This parasite can
make your rabbit very poorly. Clinical signs include head tilt
and urinary incontinence. It can also affects their brain.
