Altitude: Base Camp 2013 BaseCamp Guide Volunteer Package Altitude: Base Camp 2012 Altitude: Healthcare Mentoring Altitude is a program aimed at empowering students to pursue and reach their goals. Students selected for the program come from backgrounds and regions that are traditionally underrepresented in Canada’s healthcare workforce. These students possess the passion, dedication, and aptitude to achieve their dreams. Altitude is designed to provide them with the cultural capital needed to get them there. Numerous studies and surveys have identified a lack of role models and mentors as a factor that limits individuals’ chances of reaching their personal, professional, and career aspirations. Our goal is simple; to use mentorship as a tool to help students, brimming with potential, reach a summit perceived to be insurmountable – a career in healthcare. It is from this analogy that Altitude derives its name. The program encourages the next generation of healthcare professionals to reach higher to achieve their dreams. Mission The mission of Altitude is to empower students from underrepresented populations to pursue a career in healthcare by nurturing high quality mentoring relationships, and to help these students realize their potential as the next generation of bright, confident and compassionate healthcare professionals. Vision We will foster the development of healthcare professionals who reflect the diversity of Canada and who strive to meet the needs of society’s most vulnerable populations. Altitude: Base Camp 2013 Base Camp A base camp is a place at the base of the mountain where a team of climbers prepares physically and mentally for their journey to the summit. This is the premise behind BaseCamp. The conference will empower high school students before they embark on one of the most significant journeys of their life – University. The transition from high-school to university can be difficult and often times overwhelming. Through a two-night, three-day leadership experience, the conference hopes to help students develop the necessary tools to transition and succeed in their post-secondary education. BaseCamp will be held near the end of August so students can immediately put their new skills into practice. Principles of Base Camp Base Camp will be planned around three principles: Student Success Relationship Building Personal Empowerment Student Success relates building the skills necessary for the mentees to succeed in first-year Base Camp will empower our students to inspire and motive our students to set high goals, Relationship building is crucial to the upcoming mentorship process. A BaseCamp Guide will serve to do the similar. They will be directly involved and responsible for delivering the core content, building relationships, fostering growth, inspiring new ideas, and ultimately motivating students to become top learners and leaders in their communities. The Guides will be responsible for managing a group of 7-10 mentees. These mentees have recently graduated from high school and will be entering one of 12 participating Universities in September. They come from the lowest socioeconomic levels and marginalized populations. You will also be paired with another BaseCamp Guide to work as leaders for your group. Over the length of the conference, the Guide will aim to fulfill the three pillars of BaseCamp: Student Success, Relationship Building, and Personal Empowerment. Through various workshops and sessions, the BaseCamp Guide will engage and enlighten our mentees on the skills and abilities needed to succeed in University. Topics that will be covered include: Debunking University Myths Academic Skills: taking notes, active reading methods, memory aids Stress and Time Management Living on Your Own Personal Budgeting Furthermore, apart from tangible skills, success in University is heavily dependent on intangible skills such as personal empowerment and social competence. The BaseCamp Guide will serve to promote, inspire, and foster positive relationships amongst the mentees. This will be accomplished through formal initiatives such as ice-breakers, interactive exercises, cheers, and collaborative games. But most importantly this goal will be accomplished through informal conversations with students over the course of the weekend. It will be these relationships that will develop into a spirit of collaboration, camaraderie, and community amongst these students.
