KEWANEE CUSD# 229 BOARD OF EDUCATION SPECIAL MEETING JUNE 1, 2015
CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL FOR THIS SPECIAL BOARD MEETING
The special meeting of the Board of Kewanee Community Unit School District No. 229 was held in the Kewanee School
District’s Administrative Superintendent’s Office with President Nolan calling the meeting to order at 6:06pm. Roll call
showed the following Members present: Lempke, Sellers, Leckey, Jagers and Nolan. Superintendent Sullens was also
present for the open and closed sessions. Members Steffen and Salisbury were absent.

No audience present.
EXECUTIVE SESSION OF THE SPECIAL BOARD MEETING
At 6:08pm Member Jagers seconded a motion made by Member Sellers to enter into Closed Session to consider only
*(C) (1) to consider the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance or dismissal of specific
employees of the public body and its employees or their representatives, or deliberations concerning salary schedules
for one or more classes of employees *5ILCS 120/2 Open Meetings The School Code of Illinois/2015. Voice roll vote
showed all present Members voting aye. No Board Members voted nay. The motion carried. Members Salisbury and
Steffen were still absent. This meeting continued in the Administrative Superintendent’s Office.
CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL FOR OPEN SESSION MEETING
President Nolan called to re-open the special meeting at 6:19pm, which continued in the Administrative
Superintendent’s Office. Motion was made by Sellers and seconded by Leckey. Roll call showed Members Sellers,
Leckey, Jagers, Lempke and Nolan present. Members Salisbury and Steffen continued to be absent. Dr Sullens was still
present as well.

ACTION FROM CLOSED SESSION
Consideration and Approval of Hiring KHS Basketball Assistant Coaches for the 2015/2016 School Year
Member Leckey made the motion to hire Brandon Ince as KHS Varsity Assistant Coach, Tyler Russell as KHS Sophomore
Head Coach and Jonathon Henegar as KHS Freshman Head Coach and Member Lempke seconded the motion. The roll
call vote showed Members Leckey, Jagers, Lempke, Sellers and Nolan all voting aye. There were no nay votes heard.
The motion carried with five ayes.
NEW BUSINESS
Consideration and Approval of Honorary Diploma for former Neponset Class of 1951 Student (Korean War)-Donald
Crockett
Member Leckey approved the awarding of an Honorary KHS High School Diploma and Honorary Neponset High School
Diploma to Donald Crockett, of the Class of 1951. Member Sellers seconded the motion. Sullens commented that Mr.
Crockett left the last quarter of his Senior Year to enlist in the U.S. Military for the Korean War Conflict. Dr. Sullens also
stated that since he was originally a Neponset School District student, he suggested Mr. Crockett get a Neponset
Diploma as well, since Neponset has now currently combined with Kewanee School District #229 and is now under
District 229’s Board of Education. Dr Sullens stated that all of his male Class of 1951 peers (6), who also enlisted for
Korea, but left at the end of their Senior year, felt Mr. Crockett should be awarded this Honorary Diploma. Members
Jagers, Lempke, Sellers, Leckey and Nolan voted aye and not nays were heard. Motion carried.

ADJOURNMENT
Member Leckey seconded a motion made by Member Lempke to adjourn the meeting at 6:27pm. A voice roll vote from
Members Lempke, Sellers, Leckey, Jagers and Nolan was heard all voting aye. Member Lempke continued to be absent.
There were no nay votes heard. The motion then carried.
The open meeting was adjourned at 6:27pm.
