Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute hospital services (at the Great Western Hospital) and community health services across Wiltshire. At the Great Western Hospital we have all of the facilities you would expect to find in a busy general hospital including an Emergency Department, Delivery Suite, a full range of diagnostics tests such as X-ray, MRI and CT scans, outpatient clinics and 29 inpatient wards. We provide these services in a very modern environment ensuring patients have privacy and dignity throughout their care. Our priority whether you are cared for in hospital or in the community is to provide safe, high quality health services by promoting high cleanliness and practice at all times. We take a proactive approach to improving the way we provide care, continually looking for ways we can do things better. This means we invest in the latest technology and training for our staff and volunteers so we keep up with changes in how care and treatment is given. Some of our latest service developments include: At GWH: We are delighted with our new state-of-the-art emergency department which is now a much more pleasant, modern and comfortable environment for both patients and staff. The creation of a dedicated children's unit, means children and families are now waiting and being cared for in a calmer and more child-friendly environment, away from the busy general waiting area. The adults waiting area has also been refurbished with new seating, a TV screen and refreshments. As well as creating a much nicer environment for patients, the new layout is helping us to work more efficiently and provide an improved quality of care. In the community: The introduction of 29 Care Coordinators across Wiltshire is just one of ways we are bringing healthcare closer to home for some of our most vulnerable patients. Care Coordinators are now a familiar point of contact for many local people, helping them stay healthy, avoid issues like isolation and putting them in touch with useful health, social and voluntary services. A major refurbishment of X-ray services at Chippenham Community Hospital. A mobile chemotherapy unit based at Savernake Hospital and Malmesbury Primary Care Centre. Trust wide: Helping in Hospitals grant We have been successful in a £100,000 bid for national funds to increase volunteering in healthcare. The funds have been awarded by Nesta as part of the Centre for Social Action Innovation Fund, in partnership with the Cabinet Office. The funds will be used to increase the number of volunteers involved in the work of the Trust from around 600 to 900, and to build an effective partnership with volunteering organisations to support patients discharged from hospital to settle back in at home. This project will support improvements in patient experience as well as helping people home from hospital and reducing social isolation for older people. The Great Western Hospital Marlborough Road, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN3 6BB The Great Western Hospital opened in December 2002, replacing the Princess Margaret Hospital in Old Town Swindon. The new buildings are superbly designed and equipped and offer a first class environment for patients, visitors and staff, with over 30% of our 500 beds provided in single rooms with en-suite facilities. In December 2008 we were authorised as a Foundation Trust which means we are free to run our own affairs and invest any money we have into the frontline services we want. Since becoming a Foundation Trust, the freedom it has given us has led to many of the investments in services you will see at the Great Western Hospital. The Trust works closely with private sector partners Carillion who maintain the building and provide important services such as portering, security and catering. The food in particular has received consistently high rating in our ongoing surveys. The Brunel Treatment Centre The Brunel Treatment Centre is a 128 bed state-of-the-art facility attached to the Great Western Hospital. It has been specifically designed to treat patients who need elective (planned) surgery and where patients are offered a pre-assessment health check to ensure they are fit and informed for that surgery. The centre offers a bright, airy environment for patients and staff with a high level of equipment and facilities in every ward and room, all of which have their own en-suite toilets and showers. A third of the beds are in single rooms. The Treatment Centre has operating theatres and can share all the diagnostic, medical and surgical facilities available in the Great Western Hospital.
