Singapore Protecting Human Rights in War Zones Jordan Dunn 4th Committee The Republic of Singapore is a prosperous nation which declared itself as a completely independent nation on August 9, 1965. The Republic of Singapore has since become one of the more dominating economies of the world with the third highest per capita GDP of $59,936. The Republic of Singapore, which has a population of approximately 5 million people, about 2.91 million of which are native to the area, has opened itself up as a safe-haven for political refugees. With its prospering business community and economy, the Republic of Singapore has become a leading country in both providing a safe place for political refugees as well as protecting human rights in war zones. The Republic of Singapore has worked with both humanitarian organizations as well as leading UN officials in the cause for protecting human rights in war zones, providing protection and assistance to internally displaced persons, refugees, returning refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, and other persons of concern. Singapore, although not signing or affiliating with the UN protocols of both 1951 and 1967 regarding the protection of human rights, the country has established a series of internal laws and regulations providing protection for citizens based on a case by case basis. The government of Singapore strives to protect citizens expelled citizens and political refugees whose lives would be threatened upon return to their native countries. Singapore recognizes that not all countries can be able to provide refuge for political refugees, however, highly recommends countries to support funding for programs such as Amnesty International and the Refugee Protection Program from Human Rights First. Singapore highly encourages the support of both humanitarian organizations protecting human rights in war zones as well as the support of the UN committees for human rights as they try to combat the abandonment of governmental protection of human rights. Singapore invites all the members of the UN council to work together to find ways to provide safe places for these refugees as well as fight to stop the creation of war zones affecting the public in general. Singapore is very excited to work together along side other great UN members in order to provide and protect humans rights.
