About the UNC Department of Psychiatry Center for Women’s Mood Disorders
The internationally known UNC Center for Women’s Mood Disorders, directed by David Rubinow,
MD, Chair of the UNC Department of Psychiatry, blends clinical and research programs to address
the needs of women experiencing mood disorders in the context of reproductive events
(http://www.med.unc.edu/psych/wmd). Clinical treatment at UNC includes assessment,
multidisciplinary consultation, psychotherapy, and medication management delivered by
professionals with special expertise in the unique features of women’s mental health. The UNC
Neurosciences Hospital Perinatal Psychiatry Inpatient Unit, inaugurated in August 2012, was the first
full free-standing inpatient service in the nation dedicated to women suffering from severe mental
illness. Ongoing research at the Center is investigating biological theories about the development of
mental illness, the impact of illness and/or treatment on babies and children, and tests of both
medication and medication-free treatments. Alongside the clinical and research programs at UNC, the
