24 JUNE, 2014 LETTER TO ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS ON APPARENT ‘BREAK-DOWN’ IN ATTENDANCE OF LECTURES Dear Student We are half-way to the end of the year, 2014 and, literally a little more than twomonths away from the end-of year final assessment! And that scares me! It has become necessary for us to remind you that when you enrolled at the college, there were many students who wanted to enrol with the college, but who could not do so, because the available space could only accommodate so many students! And you happened to be among the ‘lucky’ students who were able to secure space at the college! The quotation below comes from the letter from the Principal which was given to all students in January / February 2014 and is also in the diary of the students. “ For this reason the college has decided to introduce a regulation which says students who excessively stay away from their lectures or from college with no valid reasons, will not be allowed to sit for the final, end-of-year exams! In fact, you must attend at least 80% of your lectures / classes to be allowed to sit for the exam!” When we made this statement in your in your welcome letter and diary, we meant every word in it. If your attendance has been poor, which has been the case for many students, you have been throwing away your right to be allowed to sit for the final examinations in your programme of study. CORRECT YOUR ATTENDANCE IN THE COMING SEMESTER / TRIMESTER AND REGAIN YOUR RIGHT TO SIT FOR THE EXAMINATIONS! We want you to attend your lectures, write your examinations and pass! That is our business and passion – to see you in your lectures, in your examinations and to see you passing and making a success of your studies! SWGC-Letter to all Students-DLN-001 Page 1 If your attendance has not been good, you are in trouble already – big time! To regain your right to sit for your final examinations, come to the campus, report to the Campus Manager / Deputy Campus Manager, tell him or her that you have come to make a new start, you want to start attending your lectures seriously and learn seriously. Make a written declaration in the presence of the Campus Manager / Deputy Campus Manager, or whoever they delegate this to, that your attendance will, henceforth, be nothing less than exceptional and you want to be given a second and last chance to sit for your examinations! If you make this written declaration and you honour your undertaking to attend all your lectures, do all your assignments and tasks, you will, after a month or two (before the start of examinations), be given a written letter of reprieve, which will enable you to sit for your examinations. Students who do not take advantage of this offer and who continue their poor attendance of lectures will NOT be allowed to sit for their examinations, period!
