Job description
We invite applications for 1 PhD position in ‘Advanced imaging in
clinical neuroscience’ at the School for Mental Health and
Neuroscience in Maastricht. The work will be carried out at the
department of Psychiatry and Neuropsychology and the
department of Radiology of the Maastricht University Medical
Centre. The position is embedded in the LEARN Study, a multicenter study on the added value of innovative diagnostic tests for
dementia of the Alzheimer type with a focus on the application of
novel diffusion tensor MRI data analysis methods. An important
aim is to bridge the technical aspects of neuroimaging techniques
with the clinical implications for Alzheimer’s disease. Candidates’
work aims to understand the mechanism underlying cognitive
decrements in patients with cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s
disease using novel brain network axonal connectivity analysis
techniques.
Requirements
You are a flexible and highly motivated team player. Preferably,
you have affinity with both basic and clinical neuroscience
research, be able to work in an interdisciplinary environment,
and have very good skills in English. A M.Sc. degree is required
in neurosciences, biomedical engineering, (medical) physics, or
another related field of study. Experience with image data
analysis and Matlab/C programming is highly recommended.

You will be working in a stimulating interdisciplinary biomedical
team including physicists, neuropsychologists, and clinicians of
Alzheimer Centrum Limburg of the School for Mental Health and
Neuroscience (MHeNS) in Maastricht. MHeNS is one of the
internationally leading institutes on neuroscience research, and
aims at advancing our understanding of brain-behavior
relationships by adopting an integrated approach between the
various disciplines in neuro- and behavioral science, medicine
and the life sciences. The project is embedded in Division 1,
Cognitive Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Neuroscience. The mission
of Division 1 is to generate new insights into the neurocognitive
and neurobehavioral mechanisms in order to improve treatment
and care for people with cognitive disorders and other
neurological disorders. The neuroimaging research line at the
Department of Radiology, MUMC+ focuses on state-of-the-art
cognitive neuroscience using advanced neuroimaging techniques.
