WEEKLY LESSON PLANS Name Meredith Paige Preddy Tuesday Week of: January 13th-January 19th Heat Quiz How does heat travel? What are the similarities and differences between convection, radiation, and conduction? What are the effects of heat transfer? Question of the What is heat? Essential Question Day Key Concepts Key Vocabulary Students will understand that: Conduction, radiation and convection are methods of energy transfer. Heat will travel in the direction of warmer to cooler temperatures. In two objects or materials the temperature will equal out in a process to reach equilibrium. Conduction, Radiation, Convection, Heat Transfer, Heat, Temperature, Insulator, Conductor Formative Assessment Heat Quiz Decision Made The grades for the heat quiz was as follows: 1st period: 91 2nd period: 94 3rd period: 85 4th period: 85 While going over the test, I did not see a particular area where the students were struggling. I did not see a pattern of frequently missed questions, I saw where students either got all the questions right or missed one or two from mixing up conduction and convection or the other way around. I also saw that the students who did poorly got some concepts right in the beginning of the test but did not get the same concept right towards the end. Heat comes up again in our next unit and I will continue to monitor the students who did poorly on this assessment. Earth’s Layer Foldable Wednesday Essential Question How does the earth stack up? Why are Earth’s layers in this order? Question of the Day What are the earth’s layers? Key Concepts Earth is composed of layers that are stacked up on top of one another. The layers of the earth are made up of different materials that have different densities. The four main layers of the earth are the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core. Crust, Mantle, Lithosphere, Athenosphere, Outer Core, Inner Core, Oceanic, Continental Key Vocabulary Formative Assessment Earth’s Layers Foldable Decision Made I love the idea of an interactive foldable to have the kids create the layers of the Earth. I was observed by Lori this day and she came up with a fabulous idea of Thursday how I can track the student’s pre-content knowledge by asking them to say what the layers of the earth are and to share them within the class. I had already drawn the diagram on the board for reference the next couple of days but realized I could have left some of the details out. I felt the students were copying my work instead of finding the answers on their own. Earth’s Layers Foldable Essential Question How does the earth stack up? Why are Earth’s layers in this order? I saw struggling students with some of the content but for the most part they were able to read the section and gather the information they needed. The students who were struggling, I grouped together and with the assistance from me we worked through many of their problems or questions they might have had. I had the students define 5 key words. (Crust, Mantle, Core, Asthenosphere and Lithosphere) I saw that the students knew the main layers and they were confused about the asthenosphere and the lithosphere so I have decided to go over all the key terms after our short break and then continue the unit. I think the students now understand the content through their visual representation of the Earth’s layers. Holiday Monday
