The project is based on the implementation of Gender Equality Action Plans (GEAPs) in six European universities and brings together a consortium with diverse experience in gender mainstreaming approaches. All consortium partners come from different disciplinary backgrounds and have different national context. However, each of the institutions shares common challenges for gender equality in research and innovation, and all have identified three common areas for intervention: Recruitment, progression and research support Working environment, work-life balance and institutional culture Gender and diversity dimensions of research excellence and innovation Scope This deliverable is directed towards developing a gender competent leadership and management to enhance leadership capacity in higher education and research institutions. It is an online learning package (e-learning package), designed to provide a broad overview of issues on gender responsible leadership for senior leaders and managers and other academics in leadership and management positions as well as candidates for managerial positions in academia. By contextualizing the significance of gender equality for academic leadership, the e_learning package is aiming to provide a better working environment for all researchers and academic staff. It displays why gender equality matters for good leadership and how to promote gender equality in academia. The package also informs users of the basic and vital principles of gender equality for leaders and managers. Work package 4 is one of the three core packages of the GENOVATE project directed towards empowering academic working culture and climate in favour of gender equality. The learning package is a part of this empowerment in academic institutions, which also has a potential for sustainability of culture change. The scope of this package mainly consists of the resources for refining the leaders’ understanding of gender responsible leadership in academic institutions. 4 www.genovate.eu [Deliverable 4.1] GENOVATE FP7 321378 Deliverable GENOVATE Gender Competent Leadership e-Learning Package is prepared with contributions from all 6 core partners; UNIBRAD, UCC; LTU, AU, UNINA and TU. Ankara University led the development and is responsible for making the package available to the end users within academic structures and research institutions. The package will also be useful for academic staff in non - managerial positions in raising awareness on gender responsible leadership in academic institutions. The e-Learning package consists of 4 sections: Section 1: What is Gender Competent Leadership? This section aims to provide the participants an overview of the gender issues in terms of academic leadership within our universities. Gender inequalities in academia and challenging outcomes of these inequalities are summarized here. By doing that this part provides an understanding of the importance of transformation in our working environment towards a more egalitarian, gender sensitive institution. Section 2: Why is there a Lack of Diversity in Leadership? This section seeks to discuss the reasons for a lack of diversity in leadership in particular, it will provide theoretical explanations for why there are so few women leaders in academia in the context of gender and diversity. The conventional leadership arguments will be reviewed briefly and new approaches will be introduced next. Then we will draw attention to the institutional and structural issues as well as mechanisms underlying the lack of women and lack of diversity: the gendered nature of academia e.g. career paths and discipline; issues of power; gender stereotypes; institutional structures; impact of imbalances in terms of work and home life; peer review process among other reasons. Section 3: Tackling Unconscious Bias in the Workplace This section is devoted to discussions and conceptual frameworks on unconscious bias. The section is divided into five subsections - Related research on unconscious bias, understanding unconscious bias; addressing unconscious bias; some case studies; personal reflections; and additional materials comprising critical evaluation of the role of unconscious bias and outcomes of unconscious bias. Section 4: How to Overcome the Barriers Once the users are provided an understanding of the structural issues and mechanisms underpinning the lack of diversity in academia regarding leadership, this section provides potential strategies and interventions to overcome the barriers drawing on case studies from GENOVATE core institutions. 5 www.genovate.eu [Deliverable 4.1] GENOVATE FP7 321378 The Content Structure Each Section contains: PowerPoint slides sharing highlights of the research and information on gender competent leadership. Videos and other interactive materials. Readings, links and resources for further study. A glossary of key terms. Case studies. This Online Learning Package allows for flexibility, self-paced, simple to use format. Each section is designed as stand alone and separate from each other with no compulsory sequence for users to follow from one section to another continuously. Although there is a logical and conceptual continuity between the sections, users can click on their selected section for the content they need or would like to follow at first. The package is aiming to display the gender competent leadership issues throughout all aspects. It is not designed to assess the users’ background and what they get after using the package. This package is designed as a supportive tool not as a measurement tool. The interactive structure of the package is at middle level because it is not located through a virtual learning environment e.g. the Blackboard system. Therefore reading and visual materials are being more emphasized and forums, discussions or chats are not provided yet. However the package is hosted on the GENOVATE.eu website and can be widely accessed at http://www.genovate.eu/modules/gendercompetent-leadership/ We will continue to update the package with new materials throughout the duration of the project. Conclusion Led by AU with contributions from all GENOVATE core partners, we have designed, and developed an interactive online learning on gender competent leadership and management targeted at both those in leadership and those aspiring to become managers in higher education sector and other research institutions. 6 www.genovate.eu [Deliverable 4.1] GENOVATE 7 www.genovate.eu FP7 321378 [Deliverable 4.1]
