Teachers Without Borders: Global Quake Science and Safety Initiative for Girls
Executive Summary
Teachers Without Borders (TWB), in conjunction with EERI, USGS and GEM, is developing a
"Global Quake Science and Safety Initiative for Girls" Program to educate young girls in
developing nations subject to seismic events. The initial phase of this project will develop
teaching tools and a curriculum for educating the girls in the classroom. Following this initial
phase, the girls will go out into their community for hands on research; including documentation
of the various building types in their neighborhoods.
In addition to educating the girls on the various types of buildings in their community, this will
provide field research for GEM and EERI's World Housing Encyclopedia project. Once this data
has been compiled GEM will analyze the provided information with the assistance of EERI in
order to develop the risk levels for the various communities involved in the program. This
information would then be provided back to the girls, with the goal of engaging EERI's global
membership to help facilitate the knowledge transfer and advocate for change within the
communities. This will educate the girls on seismic risks, empower them to make changes
within their communities, and introduce them to EERI members as leaders and mentors.
During phase one of this project I intend to lead the curriculum development portion of the
project for EERI. Growing up, my mother and farther were both teachers, and I spent many
hours working with young children in the classroom. I enjoy working with children in the
classroom and find their excitement engaging and inspirational. With my prior experiences
working with young children I feel that I would be uniquely suited to provide this resource to
TWB.
Project Scope of Work
- Act as lead organizer for development of seismic curriculum for the TWB program
- Facilitate EERI group to provide curriculum recommendations and review for TWB.
