Scholarship Release Time for SNL Full Time Faculty SNL faculty who are tenure-track or tenured may apply to PPDC for Scholarship Release Time. Faculty may apply for release from either a) teaching a content course; or b) mentoring their advisees for a period of one quarter. Faculty may not apply for release from teaching the following SNL core courses: Foundations of Adult Learning in the undergraduate program and or Foundations-equivalent courses in the graduate program. Faculty may not take overload during the quarter in which release time is granted. Awards of Scholarship Release Time are competitive and are meant to support faculty who need extra time to work on scholarly or creative projects. A maximum of two such awards are granted in a given year. (“Year” here means the academic year: Fall quarter - Summer quarter.) Applications for Scholarship Release Time are made by completing and submitting the application form (below) along with an updated cv to PPDC Chair John Kimsey at jkimsey@depaul.edu. Applications must be received six months prior to the start of the quarter in which the proposed release time will be taken. Thus: For Release In: Fall qtr Winter qtr Spring qtr Summer qtr Apply by: March 7 July 7 September 7 December 7 Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria: -- Clarity of the project description and its expected outcome(s). Applicants should place the project in the context of related scholarship via references and citations. (Note: Applicants are discouraged from cutting and pasting overly long sections from related proposals submitted elsewhere.) -- Relation of the project to the faculty’s scholarly or creative agenda. -- The faculty member’s status in relation to the tenure process. That is, in the case of a tie, priority will be granted to faculty who are 1) untenured; 2) tenured, but going up for full professor; and 3) full professors. In the case of a tie among untenured faculty, priority will be granted to the faculty member who is closest to the tenure decision year. -- The faculty member’s status in relation to Scholarship Release Time awards. That is, priority will be given to faculty who have not received this particular award previously. Faculty who receive Scholarship Release Time are expected to report on their work at the next regularly scheduled PPDC Scholarship Summit. In applying for release time from mentoring duties, faculty should be mindful of the challenges that might arise for graduating students in certain quarters. (Thus, if the faculty has numerous mentees set to graduate in Spring, then the faculty might want to apply for release time in a different quarter.) Please note that PPDC reviews, votes to award or not, and reports its decision to the dean. The final decision on a Scholarship Release Award rests with the dean.
