The purpose of the Ophthalmological Foundation Fellow Vejarano is to
clinical and surgical training in the diagnosis, medical management and
sometimes surgical disorders of the ocular surface, cornea, cataract, and
anterior segment.
Know the main external diseases of the eye and its differential diagnosis, learn
the use of different clinical tests for the diagnosis of corneal diseases, as the
diagnosis with the use of special tests such as OCT (Optovue - ARTVue) and
Count endothelial cells (Konan) equal to practice their clinical management
of certain diseases and in some instances observed surgical management.
Learn to identify the different types of cataracts, through proper evaluation
of the lens, know and identify ocular and systemic diseases associated with
them, as well as the pathogenic mechanism in each of these entities and
their respective treatments; know the different surgical techniques for
cataract removal as both co-axial and Bi-axial microbicides axial, taking
account of modern and different teams with correct operation.
Analysis of each case, with refractive error and know which patients are
candidates for refractive surgery (laser, Bioptics or Facorefractiva) and which
is contraindicated, in which cases it is recommended to use and Phakic
intraocular lens implantation, and if contraindicated, in which cases it is
recommended to use Intrastromal Rings or Cross-Linking (CSO) detailed
analysis routine studies and corneal refractive surgery such as the
computerized corneal topography (Placido and elevation), pachymetry,
Images Scheimpflug with PENTACAM HR (High Resolution), the Wavefront
analysis (Aberrometry) with the Wave Scan and identify and treat
complications
after
refractive
surgery
or
corrective.
The International Fellow is permanently monitored by the staff of Staff and is
expected to develop surgical skills and clinical judgment to achieve
excellence in the management of patients, the Fellow also may have the
opportunity to teach medical students.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Patient Assessment:
The Fellow will have an office equipped with all the equipment needed to
perform a thorough eye exam and direct contact with patients in a variety
of corneal diseases such as infections (Bacterial, Fungal, Parasitic), immune
disorders, trauma, high refractive disorders, degenerations and dystrophies;
external diseases like dry eye, ocular surface disorders, problems associated
with the use of contact lenses and eyelid diseases and also patients with
unusual complications and postoperative systemic diseases as our institution
is a referral center for the South Western ophthalmological the country.
It will emphasize the proper evaluation of these disorders, including a careful
history, clinical evaluation, appropriate diagnostic tests and rational
therapeutic plan; difficult cases or very specific pathologies will be discussed
in the Staff group.
Surgery
According to the experience of Fellow shall be tailored program that runs
from the accompanying surgery until they can operate alone, the program
will
have
a
methodology
and
coherent
sequence.
The Fellow will have the opportunity to attend and perform (depending on
the skill observed) multiple eye surgeries, such as:
Corneal surgery including Penetrating Keratoplasty, Lamellar keratoplasty or
endothelial transplantation (rare cases), individually or in combination with
other procedures such as glaucoma (trabeculectomy, Ahmed Valve
Implant), cataract, IOL sutured to Sclera or Iris, Anterior Vitrectomy and
reconstruction anterior segment, Cross-Linking, Intrastromal rings Implant
(Ferrara rings) (which shall issue a Certification Diploma directly from Ferrara
Ophthalmics - AJL Ophthalmic); also incisional surgery (Limbal Relaxing
Incisions)
combined
with
phacoemulsification.
Ocular surface reconstruction limb grafts and amniotic membrane grafts,
tissue adhesive application, scleral patch and pterygium surgery.
Technical Surgery Extracapsular Lens with (very rarely), Phacoemulsification
(COAXIAL - microcoaxial) with all possible techniques and surgery
Microincisional (BIAXIAL - MICROBIAXIAL) and also in complex cases such as
congenital cataract, uveitis, subluxated, hypermature, combination with
other supraespecialidades as with Vitreous and Retina and Glaucoma, etc..
Also in using Biometric Rules and accurate calculation of the IOL most
suitable for each case, even in patients with post-refractive PENTACAM use,
the decision of which also aspherical IOL based on the spherical aberration
of the cornea preoperative patient the graphical PENTACAM Zernike.
The average annual surgeries based on those made by previous scholars
have been:
Phacoemulsification: 160-200
Intrastromal Rings: 30-50
Phakic Lios: 6-10
LASIK: 50-70
And attending nearly twice the number of surgeries that are performed by
teachers, the fellow must keep a record of each surgical procedure
performed,
both
as
a
surgeon,
as
assisted
surgeries.

consultation with a wide range of information on all matters relating to this
monthly update Supraespecialidad with journals Ophthalmology, Journal of
Cataract and Refractive Surgery (JCRS), Journal of Refractive Surgery (JRS) ,

In the weekly academic subjects be reviewed (preset in the program Fellow),
articles (journal club), presentation of cases every three months and will try
to
have
the
presence
of
a
guest
