Marking Period 2 Quarterly: Projectile Motion Project
In this project, you will create your own projectile motion word problem to model the function 𝒉(𝒕) =
−𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐 + 𝒗𝒐 𝒕 + 𝒉𝒐 where t is time in seconds, vo is initial velocity, and ho is initial height. You will be
graded on creativity as well as the accuracy and completeness of your work.
1) Create a situation in which you are throwing/launching/dropping an object. Write out in a few
sentences the situation. Include who, what, where, when and why as well as units for your chosen
values of vo and ho (BE CREATIVE and ORIGINAL! See p. 292 and 298 in your text for models and
ideas).
2) Write a quadratic function in standard form (𝒉(𝒕) = −𝟏𝟔𝒕𝟐
situation using the initial height and velocity that you create.
+ 𝒗𝒐 𝒕 + 𝒉𝒐 ) to model the

3) Find the equation of the axis of symmetry. (SHOW ALL WORK!)
4) Find the vertex written as an ordered pair. (SHOW ALL WORK!)
5) Interpret in a sentence the meaning of the x and y values within the context of your problem
including appropriate units.
6) Write your quadratic function in vertex form.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
7) Graph your function by hand. Be sure to label the axes (including units) and title the graph. You
may change the scale of the axes. Label all points of interest (including zeros, AOS, vertex, yintercept). Make sure it is neat (use a ruler) and in pencil!
8) Describe how your graph is a translation of the parent quadratic function using full sentences.
(Use any/all that apply: translate up/down/left/right, reflect over x-axis, narrower, wider)

9) Solve your quadratic equation (round to 2 decimal places if necessary). Use the quadratic formula
or completing the square. (SHOW ALL WORK!)
10) Interpret the solution within the context of your problem using full sentences with appropriate
units.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
11) Create a visual representation such as a drawing (separate from your graph) modeling the
problem.
12) Organize all of the above components neatly in the form of a poster or a Powerpoint Presentation.
Please remember to keep your projects school appropriate!
If any part is submitted MORE THAN one week after the due date, that portion of the
project will not be accepted, and will earn a score of 0 for that part.
