Classroom Rules
1. Students will speak respectfully to other students, and
will listen respectfully when others are speaking.
2. Students will treat all property with respect and will
respect the personal property of others.
3. Students will not eat, drink, nor chew gum in the
classroom.
4. Students will not use their cell phones nor any other
personal electronic devices in the classroom.
5. Students will respect all school rules created by
Kovalsky High School administration.
6. Students will respect any additional rules created by
the class and with the instructor at the beginning of
the school year.
Discipline Plan
Students who choose not to follow classroom rules and are
subsequently disruptive to the learning environment will
be subject to disciplinary action. Students who are
misbehaving will first be verbally warned by the teacher,
either during class or individually before or after class.
After this initial warning, students who continue to
misbehave will receive a written warning which must be
signed by the student and the parent. Further misbehavior
will result in a phone call to the student's
parent/guardian discussing the misbehavior and a method
of resolution. Students who continue to misbehave will be
required to attend a parent/student/teacher conference,
possibly with school administrators if deemed appropriate
by the teacher. Any continuation of misbehavior will
result in the student being subject to disciplinary action
by administration, up to and including suspension or
expulsion depending on the severity of the offense, as
dictated by school administration.
Any student who receives a written warning or any more
severe disciplinary action will receive a reduction in his
or her daily participation grade, in accordance with the
severity of the offense.
Performance Calendar
As this is a performance based class,
attendance at all performances and dress
rehearsal is mandatory; students who miss
any dress rehearsal or performance will
receive a failing grade for the semester.
Additional performances may be added to
this calendar, but never without advance
warning.

Parent Volunteering
Students of Kovalsky High School Choral students are
encouraged to volunteer during the school year at Chorus
events. Volunteer opportunities include: chaperoning field
trips (including trips to state contest and spring
performance trip), ushering concerts, helping with setup/take down of concert venue, organizing/serving food at
concert receptions. Parents interested in volunteering
should contact the director regarding their specific
interests by email at akovalsky@kovalsky.edu.k12.al.us.
Concert Etiquette
Students, their family members and guests are expected to
follow certain rules at concerts regarding etiquette. These
expectations include: clapping only at the end of a piece,
not yelling out student's names from the audience, not
entering or leaving the performance space during a song,
not talking during the performance, not using cell phones
during the performance, not taking flash photography
during the performance nor video-recording without the
permission of the director. Students who fail to follow
these etiquette guidelines will receive a lowered grade for
the performance.
Performance Assessments
In addition to traditional paper evaluations, such as tests,
quizzes and homework assignments, students will also be
assessed on their ability to perform assigned repertoire.
These assessments will be in one of two forms: small
ensemble assessments (such as quartets or octets) or
individual assessments (recorded privately by the student).
Students may or may not be given advanced notice of
performance assessments. Students who participate fully
in rehearsal and attend class regularly should be well
prepared for these assessments with relatively little
preparation out of class.
Classroom Etiquette
In addition to following the classroom rules, students are
expected to meet certain etiquette requirements in the
classroom, as it also serves as a rehearsal. Students are not
permitted to chew gum nor eat, nor have any drinks
except bottled water during rehearsal. Students must
demonstrate correct posture (as will be taught by the
director) and be actively engaged in rehearsal in order to
receive full credit for daily participation. In addition,
students are expected to be in their seat with their
materials (music, pencil, and any homework assignments)
when the bell rings to begin class. Failure to meet any of
these expectations will result in a lowered daily
participation grade.
Music
All sheet music loaned to the student during the year is
the property of Kovalsky High School. Damage to the
music or failure to return the music will result in the
student being charged for the value of each piece of music
damaged or not returned. All markings should be made
in pencil, never in pen.
