Health Care Studies Program Tenure and Promotion Faculty members seeking tenure and promotion in the Health Care Studies Program (in the specialization areas of Community Health, Complementary and Alternative Health Care Practices, or Health and Fitness Training) must demonstrate the following: excellence in teaching, scholarship and professional development, and service and contributions to the college. Contributions will benefit Daemen College or community projects/organizations related to Daemen College or the Health Care Studies Program. For Tenure: Appropriate Terminal Degree: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or an earned doctorate in a related field, which is appropriate to their area of teaching, as determined by the needs of the Health Care Studies Program. Evidence of Excellence in Teaching: The candidate must be able to demonstrate all of the following: Excellence in teaching, as indicated by student course evaluations and through peer observation in the classroom Creativity and innovation in the classroom, as demonstrated through effective teaching strategies, innovative technologies, etc. Development of and contribution to new or revised/updated department courses Classroom management, including organization and maintenance of student grading, availability through office hours, textbook orders, communication with students, etc. A record of engagement with students in ‘out of the classroom’ education, through service learning, direct community involvement (local and/or international), field coordination, practicum supervision, advisement of student activities, etc. Scholarship and Professional Development: Scholarship Candidates must achieve at least two of the following: Published article in a peer reviewed journal, in the form of a case study, review article, or original research article (it is required that at least ONE of the contributions be from this category) Presentation at a national conference, state, regional or district conference (full, panel or poster presentation are acceptable) Professional Development: The candidate must be able to demonstrate activity in the area of professional development. The following demonstrate professional development: Earning an advanced degree or continuing education toward an advanced degree Additional graduate level coursework Active participation in professional associations related to the area of teaching. For example, faculty teaching community health coursework should be active in SOPHE, APHA, NWI or other related associations. Faculty teaching coursework related to Health and Fitness Training should be active in associations such as NATA, ACSM, or other related organizations. Faculty teaching coursework in Complementary and Alternative Health Care Practices should be active in associations related to their specialization, such as the AMTA, ABMP, AAMA, or other related associations. Attendance at conferences (national, regional or district) Professional involvement in area of expertise (such as clinical and/or administrative involvement) Attendance at Daemen College faculty development workshops and seminars Maintenance of any certifications or licensures affiliated with area of expertise Lectures at other universities, colleges, or local organizations Publication of a textbook, appropriate to the Health Care Studies Program Published chapter of a textbook, appropriate to the Health Care Studies Program Research or publication in progress Service and Contributions to the College (and Local Community) The following demonstrate service and contribution: Service to the Health Care Studies Program Successfully funded research or community development grant Grant proposal (adequate and appropriate to Health Care Studies Program) Service to college committees Holding a leadership role on a college committee Active participation on a local board Service to a local community organization Service as a chair or on a steering committee for a national or regional meeting External review services for associations, academic institutions or related organizations * In the event that Daemen College appoints a non-tenured faculty member to the position of Department Chair, it will be recognized that the substantial workload of the position may impact the candidate’s ability to complete all requirements of scholarship and professional development in the time expected for tenure application. In this event, consideration for this contribution to the College will be given. If warranted, an extended timeline may also be considered. For Promotion: The candidate will show continued excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service to the college, based on the contributions mentioned above.
