Hull School of Art & Design & Hull School of Performing Arts Part-time course programme W/C 18th February 2013 Programme Day Time Weeks Issues in Art & Design: Presentation, Discussion & Debate A part time evening course which addresses issues in visual culture in relation to art, sculpture, film, photography and design. A general introduction will be followed by six sessions, each focusing on a different issue and media. These themes will be covered through analyzing and discussing specific examples and case studies and by referencing contemporary theory and debate. The final session will be an exhibition visit or screening to extend and apply the ideas of the course. The course is appropriate for anyone interested in visual culture who enjoys participating in debate and discussion. Monday 04-03-13 6-9-00pm 8 Social Media for Business Social media are essential tools for spreading the word about your business. During this ten-week course, you will develop a social media strategy, understand traffic generation and how to integrate social channels. Measuring trends, working out the best advertising options and awareness of legal issues will help you engage effectively with your audience. Monday 18-02-13 6-9-00pm 10 Lighting for Portrait Photography The course will introduced you to a series of lighting techniques for enhancing portraits in the studio. This will predominantly be based around flash photography with an introduction into continuous lighting systems. You will develop skills using specialized studio equipment such as light meters, hard and soft lighting fixtures and colour checker passports. You will learn techniques to develop your image making such as posing models, using correct lenses, creative camera control, lighting to emphasize/deemphasize features, and lighting to create specific styles. You will have the chance to develop your skills using up to date studio lighting and Mac software including Photoshop CS6 and Camera RAW. There will be a series of sessions dedicated to using camera RAW and editing portraits using Photoshop. Monday 18-02-13 6-9-00pm 10 Students will need a digital SLR camera with manual controls (AV/TV/M) along with an intermediate knowledge in Photoshop. Advice on other materials/costs will be provided at interview. Branding Graphic design is a fast changing profession – not so long ago the designer would be asked to design a sign and letterhead for a local shop or livery for a local haulage company, and that’s where the job would end. Small local jobs still exist, of course, but even local companies now want web presence with moving images and sound. The local butcher now wants to produce its own recipe book – both in print and on line; it wants uniforms for its shop staff and a shop interior with waterfalls and flower gardens. Tuesday 19-02-13 6-9-00pm 10 Tuesday 19-02-13 6-9-00pm 10 Stage & Events Management Create lighting and sound to enhance the atmosphere, and emotional context for a production. Each student will have the chance to explore many Stage and Event Management disciplines through “real life” production situations. Tuesday 19-02-13 6-8-00pm 10 Introduction to Contemporary Dance Theatre Explore the total movement potential of the body and perform basic dance movements which are results of your individual creative exploration on the course. Build your movement vocabulary, co-ordination and confidence in this fun and informal 10 week course designed for people who have had little or no previous experience in contemporary dance or ballet. Tuesday 19-02-13 7-8-30pm 10 With today’s increasing international trade and globalisation, the graphic designer is required to be aware of different languages, cultures and traditions. International companies are keen to have their brand identities appeal to those different cultures making the graphic designer’s job ever more difficult. Graphic designers must also be able to work across all the different media when designing for an international company from exhibition design to web site design, from design for print to packaging. This short course will give you an insight into the ways a logo, product title, book title or film title can be dealt with in terms of graphic design and visual personality. Make! MAKE! is intended as an intensive practice-led series of workshops intended to challenge accepted notions of how art might be made. Participants will explore key art processes across a wide range of media in both two and three dimensions. They will also gain valuable critical and evaluative skills which will enable them to extend their creative vision into new territories. This course is particularly suited to individuals wishing to develop a creative portfolio of work and who are open minded, inquisitive and willing to get their hands dirty. The course is led by professional practitioners who are enthusiastic about art and want to share their knowledge with you. Print for Illustration The aim of this ten week course is to give a short introduction into illustration and printmaking. You will be working from a novel, children’s book or poetry. The ideas for your Illustrations will be developed in stages, initially as quick sketches (thumbnails) and gradually developed into the final illustrations looking at things like appropriateness, drama, movement and atmosphere. The best ideas/designs will then are developed to the final drawing stage adding detail, colour etc. The final series of illustrations will then be taken and developed into various print processes such as lino, etching and silkscreen. Wednesday 20-02-13 1- 4-00pm 10 Concepts, Design and Writing for Advertising An original concept, sophisticated design skills and a distinctive way with words are essential for advertising to an increasingly media-aware audience. These elements should work seamlessly to produce the one-off, the quirky, the memorable: the visual equivalent of the earworm. This ten-week course will use a project-based approach to cook up unique creative mixes that surprise, communicate and innovate. Wednesday 20-02-13 6-9-00pm, 10 Introduction to Web Design The introductory course is a 10 week course and provides an opportunity to learn about industry practice for, web site user centred design theory, practices and development. The course also includes applying techniques for, structuring, applying designs and code modification for HTML/CSS templates, Blogger and WordPress. The teaching sessions take place at the Hull School of Art and Design in the New Media purpose built studios, utilising industry standard design and development applications which include Adobe CS5 Master Collection on both the PC and iMac platforms. The course is an adult course and designed to be inclusive regarding students’ knowledge levels. You may be a complete novice and don’t know where to start, or you may have some experience in designing and building web site, but not sure if you are doing the right things or you may want to improve your knowledge in particular areas. Wednesday 20-02-13 6-9-00pm 10 Intermediate & Advanced Print Making This ten week course is suitable for students with little or no experience in printmaking processes monoprint, collagraph and lino cut. Working from a chosen theme, this course will enable students to create a series of unique prints exploring colour, texture and mark making with the addition of collage Advanced level After the initial course, students will have the opportunity to continue developing their skills in a further 10 week block. Recording ideas and technical notes in a visual sketchbook, students will work toward producing a portfolio of prints suitable for exhibiting in a professional manner. Thursday 21-02-13 1-4-00pm 10 Song Writing Thursday 21-02-13 6-9-00pm 10 Textiles for Accessories Throughout this fun course you will be introduced to a range of exciting mixed media textile skills. These will include felt making, stitch and embellishment techniques. Students will be introduced to basic techniques to produce 2D and 3D textile samples. Students will explore and develop these techniques to create individually designed accessories. Friday 22-03-13 10- 3-00pm 5 Introduction to Hand or Machine Knit or Crochet This is a fun introductory course for anyone looking for a taste of these creative processes. All you need is a love of creativity and a desire to learn more..Students will be introduced to basic techniques to produce 2D and 3D textile samples, developed awareness of quality of different yarns as well all aspects of design, colour and texture. Students will be guided along with the expert knowledge of our specialist lecturer. You will leave with basic technical knowledge of constructed textile together with a range of samples Saturday Art Club Saturday Art Club is intended as an practice-led series of workshops intended to challenge accepted notions of how art might be made.
