Presidents Message:
Congratulations to this year’s Grand Marshall of the 253rd St. Patrick’s Day Parade; proud 3rd
generation Cork member, celebrated Cork-man, our 125th Honoree, and Local 30 Labor Leader: Jack
Ahern. The Association congratulates the Parade Committee’s selection, honoring a true Labor Leader
as well as recognizing the Centenary of Irish labor – looking forward to Monday, March 17th, 2014.
I’d like to thank the entire 2013 slate of Officers, Chaplain Fr. James Drew and Committee members
Who served the Cork Association with distinction, and also recognize our Committee Chairs; Christmas
Party Chair Deirdre O’Hea, Installation Chairman – Dan Dennehy, Scholarship Chairwoman – Kathy
McCarthy, Dinner Dance Chair, Building Committee & Audit Committee Chairman – Dan McCarthy,
Journal Co-Chairs: Tim Murphy and Gary Power, Reservations Co-Chairs: Mary Waters, Mary Hurley
& Helen Peare, and our Centennial Labor Lockout Commemoration Chair - John Driscoll. A special
Thank You to all the Past Presidents, especially immediate Past President Tim Murphy, who continue
to give of themselves unselfishly to further the success and future of this organization.
Some highlights of our Associations’ accomplishments this past year were to try and improve
communications via Web-page, E-Mail and newsletter, acknowledging our members and officers
contributions to our organization and to Irish American culture. We are also trying to continue &
update our membership via the “membership update” seeking feedback from the membership, as well
as update our mailing list, E-mail list and calling post. We had a very successful 129th Dinner Dance
honoring Tim Hegarty, Deirdre O’Hea and David Cahill. The Association also took the lead on another
historical milestone in Irish History- the Dublin Lockout of 1913, with a commemorative & historical
event on September 29th, presented by historians Daphne Wolf and Michael McCormack. We also
honored our deceased members Mike Cronin, Denis Forde, Cornelius Lehane and Denis Collins with
dignity and pride, and will continue to pursue the principles of Benevolence, Patriotism and Protection
to Men and Women of Cork heritage and towards our history & culture!
I would like to thank the Association for their confidence to serve along with the 2014 officers elect in
the coming year, and encourage all members to participate in the coming events; the Mass for
deceased members, Installation of Officers and Scholarship Dance on Sunday, January 29th 2014, our
130th Annual St. Patrick’s Banquets on March 8th 2014, and our Biennial Dinner Dance in Cork, Ireland
At the Rochestown Park Hotel on Saturday, August 9th, 2014.

of Councilman of Mount Pleasant Town Board, Westchester County, NY.

Annual Childrens Christmas Party with Santa Claus: will take place on Sunday, December 15th from 2-5pm at the Cork
Hall. Cork kiddies ages 10 and under will be receiving a gift from Old St. Nick himself! Anyone interested in attending

The Annual Memorial Mass, Installation & Scholarship Dance: will take place on Sunday, January 19th, 2014,
beginning with a Mass for our Deceased Members at 3PM celebrated by our Chaplain, Fr. James Drew. The Installation of
Officers and Dinner will be followed by the presentation of the Scholarship Awards. Donie Carroll and friends will provide

The County Cork B.P.& P. Association’s Annual Scholarship awards will be presented at the Installation of Officers on
Sunday, January 19th, 2014. The Scholarship competition is open to members and children of members in good standing
as of November 1, 2013. There are two competition levels – Elementary School & High School. The Elementary School
applicant must be an eighth grade student graduating into high school in 2014. Elementary School applicant must
complete a minimum 500 word essay on “Labor Leader - James Connolly”. The High School (College freshman) applicant
must have completed high school in 2013, and submit SAT scores for that year. High School applicant must complete a
minimum 1000 word essay on “The historical significance of the Dublin Lockout - 1913”. An additional scholarship
award will be awarded for the High School (College) best essay. Anyone interested in applying should contact Kathy

and postmarked no later than January 6th, 2014.

The Aisling Irish Center’s Photographic exhibition is scheduled to open to the public by Friday, December 20, 2013 914237-5121 or info@aislingcenter.org. Another great Christmas present, gift or presentation: Memory Brings Us Back: Irish
Stories of Farewells and Fortunes, a documentary written and directed by award winner Derek Woods, and narrated by
Ciaran O'Reilly of the Irish Repertory Theater. The documentary features music by Joanie Madden and Cherish The Ladies,
Deirdre Connolly, Paddy Noonan and Sean Fleming and includes photographs from renowned Irish photographer, John
Minihan of the Irish Arts Center. The DVD includes some beautiful old photographs and footage from the archives that will
evoke very fond memories for many people who immigrated to America during this era, socializing in Gaelic Park,
Rockaway Beach, and nights spent in dance halls such as Jaeger House and The Red Mill, dancing to the music of bands

The Dublin City Ramblers Christmas Show is coming to the NY Irish Center 10-40 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City for

The Irish Arts Center presents “An Irish Christmas” from December 6th through the 21st at their venue on West 51st Street

Ted Flanagan, Mary Waters and Mary Forde. Also prayers for Kitty Spedden, sister of Mary Anne McCarthy who’s in
the hospital, and for Billy Boland, brother-in-law of Bill O’Driscoll who’s also in the hospital in critical condition.
Congratulations: to Dan & Kathy McCarthy on the birth of their daughter Rose Katherine on October 26th and to
grandparents Frank & Kathleen O’Donovan, on the birth of their granddaughter Deirdre Mary. Congratulations also to
member and Corkman - James Mahoney, Business Manager of Local 580, who was also recognized by the Irish Echo
“Labor 100”. Kudos to Past President Dan McCarthy CFO of Covenant House, who braved the cold in the this years “Sleep
Out” on November 21st raising awareness of less fortunate youth in need and $6000 towards helping make a difference.
Congrats also to Kerry Driscoll, daughter of John Driscoll. Kerri ran in the 50th Anniv. JFK 50 Mile race in Boonstown,
MD. Her goal time for the race was 10 hrs, however, she completed the race in 9:25:47. During the last 8 miles, winds
were as high as 25 to 36 miles an hour. We are all very proud of her.
Condolences: The Association was well represented for the wake and funeral of Denis Collins who was called home to
his eternal reward on Wednesday, October 16th, 2013.Denis was a 33 year old member of the Association, and delighted
many of us with his wisdom, stories and participation in all things Cork and Irish American; condolences to his wife Eileen,
his son, three daughters, and grandchildren. Our sympathies extend also to the family of member Cornelius Lehane,
cousin of Helen Lehane Peare, to Tom Murphy and his family on the death of his brother in law Alan G. Christoffersen, to
Noelle Clancy and her family on the passing of her mother Marguerita Clancy in Ireland.

County Cork Pipe Band: is always looking for new members! Practices are held every Wednesday from 7pm – 9pm at the
Cork Hall. Anyone interested can check out their Face book page. Many Colleges offer Scholarships to experienced pipe &
drum players, such as IONA, Manhattan College, among others.
