A special Thank You to all the Past Presidents, especially immediate Past President Tim Murphy, who continue to give of themselves unselfishly to further the success and future of this organization. Some highlights of our Associations’ accomplishments this past year were to try and improve communications via Web-page, E-Mail and newsletter, acknowledging our members and officers contributions to our organization and to Irish American culture. We are also trying to continue & update our membership via the “membership update” seeking feedback from the membership, as well as update our mailing list, E-mail list and calling post. We had a very successful 129th Dinner Dance honoring Tim Hegarty, Deirdre O’Hea and David Cahill. The Association also took the lead on another historical milestone in Irish History- the Dublin Lockout of 1913, with a commemorative & historical event on September 29th, presented by historians Daphne Wolf and Michael McCormack. We also honored our deceased members Mike Cronin, Denis Forde, Cornelius Lehane and Denis Collins with dignity and pride, and will continue to pursue the principles of Benevolence, Patriotism and Protection to Men and Women of Cork heritage and towards our history & culture! The County Cork B.P.& P. Association’s Annual Scholarship awards will be presented at the Installation of Officers on Sunday, January 19th, 2014. The Scholarship competition is open to members and children of members in good standing as of November 1, 2013. There are two competition levels – Elementary School & High School. The Elementary School applicant must be an eighth grade student graduating into high school in 2014. Elementary School applicant must complete a minimum 500 word essay on “Labor Leader - James Connolly”. The High School (College freshman) applicant must have completed high school in 2013, and submit SAT scores for that year. High School applicant must complete a minimum 1000 word essay on “The historical significance of the Dublin Lockout - 1913”. An additional scholarship award will be awarded for the High School (College) best essay. Congrats also to Kerry Driscoll, daughter of John Driscoll. Kerri ran in the 50th Anniv. JFK 50 Mile race in Boonstown, MD. Her goal time for the race was 10 hrs, however, she completed the race in 9:25:47. During the last 8 miles, winds were as high as 25 to 36 miles an hour. We are all very proud of her. Condolences: The Association was well represented for the wake and funeral of Denis Collins who was called home to his eternal reward on Wednesday, October 16th, 2013.Denis was a 33 year old member of the Association, and delighted many of us with his wisdom, stories and participation in all things Cork and Irish American; condolences to his wife Eileen, his son, three daughters, and grandchildren. Our sympathies extend also to the family of member Cornelius Lehane, cousin of Helen Lehane Peare, to Tom Murphy and his family on the death of his brother in law Alan G. Christoffersen, to Noelle Clancy and her family on the passing of her mother Marguerita Clancy in Ireland.
