CREATIVE DRAWING WITH WAYNE QUACKENBUSH
This class will come up with 7 words or phrases each week to stimulate the imagination. These
prompts will form the basis for daily drawing. In class we will learn techniques for creative
drawing, including visualization, blind-folded drawing, using the non-primary hand, etc. This
class will help you establish a daily drawing practice. We will share our work each week. Open to
all media and skill levels.
Instructor: Wayne has a BFA from Pratt Institute with an emphasis on Drawing and
Illustration. He owns and runs Annex Comics in Newport. This class is based on the popular Art

ESSENTIALS OF PORTRAIT AND FIGURE DRAWING WITH LARRY MELLO
This class will serve as an introduction to classical portrait and figure drawing skills for the
beginner or a tune-up for the more experienced student. We will explore the use of line, shading
and values as they pertain to figure and portrait drawing. This class will prepare you for future oil
or watercolor portrait classes. We will have a model each week and long and short poses.
Instructor: An art educator for 35 years, Larry has an MAE from RISD with concentration in
Painting and Sculpture. He has also studied at the Lyme Art Association.

SMALL PAINTINGS-BIG ART WITH KELLEY MacDONALD
Create powerful, compelling paintings in a small format for show opportunities, sharing on social media, or
as a way to move your art forward. We’ll complete exercises to produce a complete painting in a small
format in about an hour. We’ll also discuss how to frame a small work.
Instructor: Kelley is an award-winning artist who works in oil and acrylics. She gives talks on
blogging and consults on marketing art. She finds beauty in every glance and is constantly learning to

PORTRAITS IN WATERCOLOR WITH SUSAN KLAS WRIGHT
Would you love to paint a portrait of loved ones or paint portraits on commission? Learn to capture the
spirit and achieve a happy likeness of the individual. We will have a model for each session. Some
experience with watercolor required..
Instructor: Susan Klas Wright earned her BFA from the State University of New York and her
Masters At Teaching from Rhode Island College. Sue is a popular teacher at the Rhode Island
Watercolor Society where she is a board member and an artist member.

PAINTING SEA ROSES IN WATER SOLUBLE PASTEL WITH CELESTE CHUTE-WRIGHT
This class will feature the versatility of water soluble oil pastels using the pink beach rose as subject. This
flowering shrub rose is seen throughout Rhode Island beach areas during spring and summer. Discover its beauty
through water soluble pastels. All materials provided. Beginners welcome.
Instructor: Celeste has an art degree from UCC (NJ) and is an artist member of the Portsmouth Arts Guild and
the East Greenwich Art Club. She enjoys painting nature and sharing her love of painting with others.

MULTI-MEDIA PRINTMAKING WITH CASEY WEIBUST (AGES 15+ AND ADULTS)
Learn a variety of intaglio printing techniques including drypoint and collograph. Add a collage
element to your piece using the process of chine colle. Collaborations are encouraged! All levels
welcome.
Instructor: Casey graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2010 with a
BFA in Printmaking. Since then, she has taught printmaking at a variety of programs. She works in
many mediums and encourages students to try various processes and to collaborate and combine

WATERCOLOR TRICKS WITH LISA SMITH ARNOLD
Come and experiment with ways to make your work more dimensional, creative and interesting. By
using various tools like cellophane, tape, sea salt and more, learn how to enhance your watercolors
with texture, design and mood. Open to all levels..
Instructor: Lisa Smith Arnold has a BFA from Syracuse University and studied at the Art Students
League in NYC. She worked at Conde Nast Publishing. She was creative coordinator, writer and
illustrator for “You Know You’re Really Pregnant When” (Penguin Books) and “Drawing for
Dummies” (Wiley Press)

PAINTING PORTRAITS IN 4 COLORS WITH KATHY WEBER
Find out how easy it is to paint portraits when you use a limited palette of only 4 colors. This is the
palette made famous by Andres Zorn. First we will create a color chart. Then we’ll paint from a
model. You’ll see how effective these colors can be for flesh and hair colors. Oils and acrylics
welcome. Some previous drawing or painting experience recommended.
Instructor: Kathy Weber has a BFA/Painting from UMass Dartmouth. She has won numerous
awards and her work has been published in American Artist Magazine. She has a background in

WATERCOLOR BASICS WITH JOHN TOLLEY
Learn the basics of painting with watercolor in this fun, introductory class. We’ll work from a still
life setup and you’ll come away with several finished paintings. This is a past time which will
reward you with many hours of enjoyment to come. Beginners welcome.
Instructor: John Tolley didn’t pick up a paintbrush until later in life but has gone on to
become an award-winning watercolorist. Become inspired to embark on your own journey to
becoming an artist.

PET/ANIMAL PORTRAITS WITH ELLEN FERRIN (AGES 15+ AND ADULTS)
Try your hand at capturing the unique spirit of your favorite animal or pet, using the painting or drawing
media of your choice. In this workshop we’ll determine the best approach to creating a one-of-a-kind
portrait. Start saving snapshots or sketches now, and join us in celebrating both our favorite animals and the
process of making art. (This class does not include wildlife drawing). Some painting or drawing experience
recommended.
Instructor: Ellen Ferrin has extensive experience as an artist, designer and teacher. She studied at the
New York Studio School and the Art Students League. She has a design degree from Philadelphia
University. Her work is in many private collections.

VISUAL JOURNALING WITH LISA SMITH ARNOLD
Journaling is done for so many reasons-travel journals, dream journals-the list is endless. Why not record your
thoughts and visually enhance them? This is not scrapbooking-it’s about designing a page around your text in
different mediums.

CLAY AND GELATIN MONOPRINTS WITH SUZANNE LEWIS (AGES 15+ AND ADULTS)
Explore two new techniques for creating monoprints-clay and gelatin plates. You will paint on
these surfaces and pull a one-of-a-kind print. These prints have a different look than those done on
a plexiglass plate. No prior printmaking experience necessary. Come have fun!
Instructor: an award-winning printmaker, Suzanne Lewis has a Master of Arts in Teaching
from R I College and Certificate in Drawing and Painting Studies from RISD Continuing
Education. She has been studying printmaking for many years and loves to introduce people to new
techniques that she has learned.

WATERCOLOR SKETCHING IN BRISTOL WITH MARGARET OWEN
Enjoy a day of sketching in the scenic town of Bristol. We will learn sketching techniques in pen and ink
and watercolor that will enable you to capture the scene quickly and with a minimum of equipment. We
will work with color, pattern and thumbnail compositions. Come away with a portable skill that can help
you enjoy any place that life takes you. We will meet at the Beehive Café before branching out.
Instructor: Taught by local artist Margaret Owen who holds an MFA in painting from the New York
Academy of Art. Students of all skill levels have found her teaching methods to be accessible and

PASTELS FOR EVERYONE WITH JAY EGGE (AGES 15+ AND ADULTS)
This workshop teaches initial choices of paper and materials as well as composition. It also
covers application techniques such as layering, gradation and blending. For beginners and
intermediates. Give pastels a try with this dynamic teacher!
Instructor: Jay Egge has displayed and won numerous awards with mixed media, oil and
pastel. He has also provided workshops and demos at various galleries and organizations in
RI. He is currently represented by Alta Luna Gallery in Bristol.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: The Portsmouth Arts Guild reserves the right to cancel classes with
insufficient enrollment. Refunds of 100% if class is canceled; 80% for withdrawal at least one week before

ages 15 and up with permission of instructor. If student is a minor, parent/guardian will be asked to sign a
waiver on the first day of class.
