Reading Quiz Chapter 1
Due: Monday, Jul 01 at 4:00 pm
Students will answer 10 questions during the course of their reading chapter 1
that cover the required reading topics for that chapter, and will do so prior to the
start of class when the topic for that chapter will be discussed. Students will
receive one participation point if they complete all of the questions on the
reading quiz prior to the start of class.
Reading Quiz Chapter 2
Due: Tuesday, Jul 02 at 3:59 pm
Students will answer 15 questions during the course of their reading chapter 2
that cover the required reading topics for that chapter, and will do so prior to the
start of class when the topic of that chapter will be discussed. Students will
receive one participation point if they complete all of the questions on the
reading quiz prior to the start of class.

This examination covers the 11 topics assigned for Chapter 1.

Critical Examination Papers (Learning Outcome 3)
Due: Tuesday, Jul 23 at 2:59 pm
Students will identify a popular claim about a psychological topic reported by the
media (e.g., a television news report that people with strong friendships are
healthier, a magazine blurb asserting that ADHD is a chemical imbalance, or a
online news posting that exercise is as effective as anti-depressants) and
compare the popular claim to the original published research study upon which
the claim is based. Specifically, students will critically examine the extent to
which the popular claim is justified by the research hypothesis, the sample of
participants studied, the study procedure and instruments, the analyses, and
the authors' results and conclusions. Students will turn in: 1) a copy or direct
quotation of the popular media claim, 2) a copy of the title page and abtract of
the original study, and 3) a 2-3 page summary of their evaluation with their final
decision as to whether the popular claim is warranted by the research or
not. The critical evaluation papers will be worth 25 points and will be graded
according to evidence of critical thinking (e.g., supporting assertions with
reasonable evidence) and persuasiveness in support of the student's decision.

Research Participation (Learning Outcome 3)
Due: Thursday, Aug 08 at 12:59 am
To gain an experiential understanding of the research process students will
have the opportunity to participate in one or more research studies being
conducted in the psychology department. Students are expected to be
available for up to 2 hours of participation at 1 point for every 10 minutes of
participation for a total of 12 points. If, by no fault of the student, the requisite 2
hours of participation cannot be completed it is the responsibility of the student
to contact the instructor or TA for an alternative means of earning the remaining
points.
Frankl's Psychology (Learning Outcome 2)
Due: Thursday, Aug 08 at 2:59 pm
Students are responsible for reading Man’s search for meaning during the
course and will write a 2-3 page paper that describes: 1) Frankl’s unique
perspective on human psychology, 2) the relevance of that perspective to
psychological topics of import to people of faith (e.g., free will), and 3) its
potential therapeutic usefulness. This assignment will be graded according to
the clarity and cogency with which each of these themes is described and
connected to the text. It is worth 25 points.

Chapter 16 Exam
Due: Monday, Aug 12 at 11:59 pm
This exam covers the 15 topics assigned for Chapter 16.
Final Examination

The Final Exam covers all the topics from all the chapters covered in the course
