U.K. AND IRELAND FELLOWSHIPS Application Checklist Initial Research Determine the school(s) and degree programs you are applying to. Determine the fellowships that match those degree programs (based on which university offers the program, length of program, and area of study). If you are applying to Rhodes, Marshall, or Mitchell, submit a Request for Endorsement. Learn the application process. Visit the website of the fellowship or fellowships you are applying to. Note the following: All materials you will need Deadlines Numbers of letters of recommendation Personal essay Complete a rough draft of a personal essay (approximately 1,000 words). Complete a substantially revised draft every few weeks. Recommenders and references Discuss your list of recommenders with CURF or, for Rhodes/Marshall/Mitchell applicants, your fellowships advisor. Ask your recommenders for a reference letter. Send them the CURF recommendation packet, along with a draft of your personal statement etc. If possible, meet with your recommenders to discuss your plans as they begin to write your letter. Remind your recommenders of deadlines at least two weeks in advance. Marshall and Gates require a “Proposed program(me) of study” statement. Submit a draft of this academic program statement to your fellowships advisor (or CURF if applying to Gates but not Marshall). Submit a second draft to your fellowships advisor or CURF. Miscellaneous application items (Rhodes) Send your fellowships advisor a list of “Activities and Honors.” (Rhodes) Locate your passport or birth certificate. You will need to upload a scanned version. Get your photograph taken (you will need to upload a photo to the applications). Have a friend proofread your entire application (not for Rhodes). Submit all applications one day before their deadlines.
