Congratulations on your child being accepted for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery at Saint Louis
Children’s Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. Dr. T.S. Park considers your child a suitable candidate for
this procedure. The next step will be to look at some possible dates if you wish to proceed. You will
receive a detailed cost with payment methods once we schedule. In the meantime, there is a
document on the SDR Facebook Group with the overall costs. If you wish to schedule, please let me
know an approximate time-frame so that we can put your child on a waiting list. You must specify a
month and your child’s name can be on the waiting list only for one month. We cannot put any name
on multiple lists. Ultimately, we would be the ones to decide on which specific day we schedule the
surgery, but you may if you like state a preference (early month, mid, late, etc.). If Dr. Park has
recommended possible orthopaedic surgery, he will want your child to be examined by one of our
orthopaedic surgeons (whether or not you choose to have the surgery here). We would appreciate it
you could let us know if you would like the orthopaedic surgery done here. We will schedule it when
we schedule the SDR. If you wait until you are here to decide on orthopedic surgery, it is highly
unlikely we will be able to accommodate you during your scheduled stay and you will need to return at
a later date or stay in St. Louis at least several weeks longer. In that case, we cannot guarantee
continued physical therapy at the same times or the same frequency as immediately post-op. Our
protocols do require that you remain here for at approximately three (3) weeks after discharge, for a
total of about a month in the US. Once we have the date for surgery, we will also schedule physical
therapy. As you plan for the trip, we will also need to know whether your child has a wheelchair or
stroller which will be suitable after surgery. Your child will need a wheelchair or stroller especially for
long distances for about 2 weeks after discharge as he/she will be quite weak still. If you intend to
bring a stroller, please send us pictures of your child sitting in it (from the front and side) so that we
may determine whether it is suitable. Otherwise, we will send you a form to complete and once we
have scheduled. It can be scanned and e-mailed or faxed to the number on the form. If you have any
questions, please feel free to contact me. We look forward to assisting you and making this as smooth
and stress-free as possible. Thank you James Lee Coordinator, International Scholars and
