2016 Novi Local Scholarship Descriptions and Criteria
Scholarships offered by School Organizations
1.
INTERACT CLUB OF NOVI HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is offered to a Novi High School senior who has served the school and community in some
outstanding way. The intent is to reward a student who has looked beyond his/her own needs to help others.
This scholarship is not based on financial need, nor is there an academic requirement. It may be used for
college or vocational school. Preference is given to members of the high school Interact Club.
(Amount in 2016: 1 @ $100)

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1991, this scholarship requires National Honor Society membership, exemplary attendance at
meetings and functions, a 3.6 G.P.A. and a one page typed essay explaining how the applicant has
exemplified the two characteristics of leadership and service that are an integral part of being a member of
National Honor Society. (Include total service hours, offices held, committee work, leadership roles in other
clubs, sports team captains, etc.)

NOVI EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
(NESPA)
This award, established in 1988, is intended to aid a Novi senior in post high school studies (college or
vocational school). “B” or better grades and good moral character and leadership qualities are required.
Financial need is not a factor in selection.

NOVI HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is offered to a Novi High School senior who is committed to making a difference at our
school through leadership and service. The intent is to reward a student who has gone above and beyond to
build and promote a positive school culture. This scholarship is not based on financial need, nor is there an
academic requirement. It may be used for college or vocational school. Preference is given to members of
the high school student council. (Amount in 2016: 2 @ TBD)
5.
DEERFIELD PTO ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be offered to a graduating senior who must have attended Deerfield Elementary School
for at least two years. The senior must have “accepted” status at an accredited institution of higher learning
at the time the scholarship is awarded. Applicants are also required to fill out the PTO Alumni Scholarship
Supplemental form.

NOVI MEADOWS PTO ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be offered to a graduating senior who must have attended Novi Meadows for fifth and
sixth grade. The senior must have “accepted” status at an accredited institution of higher learning at the time
the scholarship is awarded. Applicants are also required to fill out the PTO Alumni Scholarship
Supplemental form.

7.
NOVI WOODS PTO ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be offered to a graduating senior who must have attended Novi Woods Elementary
School for at least two years. The senior must have “accepted” status at an accredited institution of higher
learning at the time the scholarship is awarded. Applicants are also required to fill out the PTO Alumni
Scholarship Supplemental form.

8.
PAUL R. LePLAE ORCHARD HILLS PTO SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is offered to a graduating senior who must have attended Orchard Hills Elementary School
for at least two years. The senior must have “accepted” status at an accredited institution of higher learning
at the time the scholarship is awarded. Applicants are also required to fill out the PTO Alumni Scholarship
Supplemental form. There is an optional creative piece.

PARKVIEW PTO ALUMNI and JOSEPH IMRICK SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is offered to a graduating senior who must have attended Parkview Elementary School for at
least three years. The senior must have “accepted” status at an accredited institution of higher learning at
the time the scholarship is awarded. Applicants are also required to fill out the PTO Alumni Scholarship
Supplemental form. For essay, students are asked to choose one of the 7 Habits from Stephen
Covey’s “The Leader in Me”.

VILLAGE OAKS PTO (V.O.I.C.E) ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is offered to a graduating senior who must have attended Village Oaks Elementary School
for at least two years. The senior must have “accepted” status at an accredited institution of higher learning
at the time the scholarship is awarded. The senior must not be applying for any other Novi PTO Alumni
Scholarship. Applicants are also required to fill out the PTO Alumni Scholarship Supplemental form.

Scholarships Offered by Community Groups
11.
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (AAUW) NORTHVILLE-NOVI
This scholarship will be offered a to graduating senior who has attended Novi High School for at least one
year. Applicants must have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.00 with plans to attend college next fall. They should
also have demonstrated leadership in school, an organization, or work experience and be available for an
individual interview. Please submit a double spaced, no smaller than 12 point, one page essay discussing a
current women’s issue; one that you relate to personally. Essays longer than one page will be disqualified.

BAND BOOSTER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a NHS senior who is pursuing a degree in Music. Students with a
minimum G.P.A. of 3.00 who have 4 years of participation in a high school band program and are pursuing a
degree in Music are eligible. Please submit a 250 word essay discussing “How participation in band has
contributed to my personal development.” One letter of recommendation from a non-music teacher is also
required.

13.
BUFFY LIND BAND BOOSTER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a NHS senior in honor of a former Band Booster and her many years of
dedication to the NHS band program. Students with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.00 who have 4 years of
participation in a band program are eligible. Please submit a 250 word essay discussing “How participation
in band has contributed to my personal development.” One letter of recommendation from a non-music
teacher is also required.

14.
DARLENE EPHRAIM PROVIDENCE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is offered to seniors committed to becoming a health care professional. These students
must have taken or be concurrently taking the Medical Career Explorations course at Novi High School. An
essay of up to 250 words (typed and double spaced) outlining your career goals and reasons for wanting to
pursue a career in health care is required.

15.
DAVID LANGHAM MEMORIAL BAND BOOSTER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a NHS senior in memory of David Langham, a 1999 NHS graduate.
David continues to inspire fellow students by the passion he demonstrated for band and the arts. Students
with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.00 who have 4 years of participation in a band program are eligible. Please
submit a 250 word essay (typed and double spaced) discussing “How participation in band has contributed to
my personal development.” One letter of recommendation from a non-music teacher is also required.

16.
DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, first available in 1991, is offered to a female student who intends to pursue a career in
teaching. It is funded by an educational honorary sorority. Students who wish to apply must write a short
essay entitled, “Why I Want to be a Teacher”.

17.
FRIENDS OF THE NOVI LIBRARY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a senior residing in Novi who has indicated an interest in Library Science,
Information/Knowledge Management, Education, Literacy, or other related areas. A Friends of the Novi
Public Library Application is required. The student should have a 3.00 GPA in high school and is asked to
furnish two letters of recommendation from teachers. The student is also asked to submit a short essay
describing his/her goals and aspirations in the chosen field. Financial need may be a consideration.

18.
FUERST SCHOLARSHIP - Novi Educational Foundation (NEF)
Any Novi Community School District resident pursuing post HS education at an accredited community
college, college, university, technical, or vocational school is eligible. Decision for scholarship will be based
on NEED, application, and interview. Requirements: Local Scholarship Application, three letters of
recommendation, High School Transcript, FAFSA, IRS Forms 1040 and W2. Refer to Fuerst
Scholarship Information Sheet for further instruction.

NOVI ATHLETIC BOOSTERS’ SCHOLARSHIP
The purpose of the Novi High School Athletic Boosters’ Scholarship is to recognize students who have
successfully demonstrated their proficiency at combining academics, athletics, and school involvement during
their high school years. Minimum requirements are a 3.0 G.P.A., participation in one sport for a minimum of
three years, one of which must be senior year, and participation in some additional school activity or an
additional sport. You must write a one to two page double-spaced essay discussing “What Lessons did my
Student-Athlete Experience Provide”. Additionally, you must submit a Coach’s Evaluation Sheet, which is
available online.

20.
NOVI POLICE OFFICERS’ ASSOCIATION
The Novi Police Officers’ Association established their scholarship in 1985 to recognize a senior who has
been an outstanding citizen. The recipient of this award would be a model of community involvement and
moral behavior.

21.
OAKPOINTE CHURCH - HIGHER GROUND SCHOLARSHIP
The main criteria for this scholarship are integrity, community service, and humility. The scholarship requires
a letter of recommendation from a youth leader, community leader, pastor, teacher, other mentor or
advisor. Additionally, the applicant needs to submit a letter of support from one individual who has been
helped and uplifted by the applicant. An essay entitled “Why Character Matters” that articulates the
importance of character in society is also required.

22.
ROTARY CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
To be eligible, students must have at least a “B” average, be of good moral character and show substantial
community service over the years. The Common Application must be typed. Also, include a one to two
page double-spaced essay discussing “How I have used the Rotary Four-Way Test in my Own Life.” Go to
www.novirotary.org for further information. Finally, students must be available for an interview.

23.
ROTARY CLUB / INTERACT SCHOLARSHIP
To be eligible, students must have at least a “B” average and been active in the school Interact Club at least
two years. The Common Application must be typed. Also include a one or two page double-spaced
essay discussing “What is Rotary and How it Benefits our Community and the World Community.” Students
should also include their own contributions to the Interact Club. Information is available at
www.novirotary.org which has a link to Rotary International’s website. Finally, students must be available for
an interview.

Memorial Scholarships
24.
COACH DON SILL MEMORIAL LACROSSE SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2006, this scholarship honors the memory of Coach Sill, founder of Novi Lacrosse and a great
teacher and coach on and off the field. Applicants need to have participated in lacrosse for 3 years, earning
the minimum of a 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate leadership qualities. An essay is required describing how your
experience playing lacrosse can be applied in your future life. One teacher recommendation is also
required.

25.
DAVID LANGHAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship honors David Langham, who despite an ongoing battle with kidney disease was a 1999 NHS
co-valedictorian and a devoted member of the band, choir, and thespian programs. It recognizes students
who, like David, have succeeded in school and life despite a serious obstacle, and/or demonstrate a true
passion for performing. Applicants must submit a brief essay explaining how they meet these criteria,
supported by one letter of recommendation.

26.
JOEL FINZEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1988 as a memorial to Joel Finzel, Class of 1987, this scholarship will be awarded to three
students who have a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher and have participated in athletics.

27.
MARK DuVALL ANGELOCCI “QUALITY NOT QUANTITY” SCHOLARSHIP
Mark Duvall Angelocci lived a quality life, making an impression on all who met him! This scholarship
focuses on students who lead a quality life. This award will recognize one male and one female from each
sports season (Fall, Winter, Spring) who has been an active SADD member, and/or contributed to a sport
team. Applicants are required to fill out the Mark Duvall Angelocci “Quality not Quantity” Scholarship
Application including a document reflecting on the statement “quality not quantity”, two references from
community members, one from a coach and one from a teacher.

28.
NICK MAINELLA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in loving memory of the Mainella family’s son and brother, Nick, class of
2003. It recognizes two seniors, one male and one female, who have been actively involved in sports or
other team related activities in which they played an influential role. Applicants are required to have a
financial need, a GPA of 2.5 or better, and to write a 1-2 page typed essay on “What it Means to be a part of
a Team and what you hope your influence has been on others.” Applicants should not be afraid to have a
sense of humor.

29.
NOVI YOUTH ASSISTANCE / NANCY OKRAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
NYA initiated this scholarship in 1998 in memory of Nancy Okray. NYA offers this award to an individual for
vocational school or college. The scholarship is based on financial need and the individual’s contribution of
time and energy in community involvement.

30.
RICHARD ERWIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This award is presented to one male and one female Novi High School senior who has been on an athletic
team for at least two years, has earned at least one athletic letter, has a 3.00 GPA or higher, and who has
been a member of SADD for at least two years.
