75th Anniversary Committee – March 22, 2012
In attendance: Vern Budge, Dave Bell, Sean Michael, Pam George, Michael Timmons, Dave Anderson
Phone - Jan Striefel, Nancy Monteith, Craig Johnson
Thanks to Nancy for agreeing to co-chair. Sean Michael – slow in getting By-laws approved to make
Nancy an official member of the board. Working with Pam and Chris Sands to approve. 75th committee is
an Ad Hoc committee of Board so members should be a board members.
Dave Anderson – met with Patty Halafia and Cecile Gilmer . Patty has agreed to allow Cecile to work on
this event. Later on she should be invited to this meeting. Patty is director of Alumni for USU. Talked
about time frames – Dave will discuss further USU events and timing of our event.
Patty said - Reminded us that people come back to see people. Advertise who is coming.
CEU’s possible for speeches. LACIS (ASLA) requirements to gain approval. Firms may help pay costs for
people to come to Logan.
Football – tailgate, golf
June is not good. Too quiet on campus Sept and August would be preferable.
Students provide hosting help, alumni panel, trends of the future.
Homecoming date is not known until March 14th for following fall. Football schedule is not set until Feb.
or Mar.
Use it as a development tool.
Dave will follow up with Cecile G about timeline for marketing. Get Chris Sands at a meeting. Will ask
them both be here to next meeting. Make it the major agenda of that meeting.
June is very quiet in Cache Valley – fall has more fun events.
Vern Budge– some alumni said early spring. Getting replies back from alumni is hard. Not getting a good
response. My suggestion is to nail it down among the committee.
Michael Timmons –has spoken with more recent alums – they can see advantages of either spring or
fall. Lock it in soon. About 3 out of 20 leaned toward June. 1 wanted football, but that schedule is not
available.
Nancy Monteith – would like to do it when the students are there. Understand how busy, but that
would celebrate the department.
Dave Anderson – September is Ag Month if we wanted to do things with students and recent grads –
could we do two events? One for current students – one for the older alums.
Sean – the dean would like to favor us that year during Ag month. During school year we get to brag and
get a lot more visibility.
Kathy Allen – staff have more time to work on the event during the summer if you have it in Sept.
Pam George– has looked at other universities. There is no set time that has been chosen as the best.
Timmons – looked at class reunions that are in May. Faculty would have a hard time working it in Sept.
Likes the two-part idea.
Sean Michael – the real work will be done by staff and myself and we don’t have time in spring to
devote to it.
School starts August 21st that year. Aug. 28th, 29th 30 would take advantage of Labor day on Sept. 1
Jan Striefel – we need to get it nailed down Is Labor Day good? Sean – let’s check to make sure there is
nothing going on that weekend. Goal for next meeting to target Labor Day.
Good energy. Students would be excited to work. Academic checkin- Kathy and Pam on community
events.
Email the results before the next meeting. Check TOU and LOTOJA (Note: Pam has found neither of
these conflict with the Labor Day weekend.)
Art work for Logo – in touch with Jamie regarding the sketches and will try to get it done this week.
Expecting to get something in next few days. Jan will send out what she receives from Jamie.
What other schools have done for costs? Pam - $50 for an evening dinner. Entire university event
could buy different passes based on what you plan. Thurs, Friday Sat. and Sunday
Diamond pass - $150 for all events, but did not include special events for concerts etc.
A portion of money goes to scholarships.
Craig Johnson – CEU credits - add on the cost of scholarships to those credits.
Sean M. – we could have a pre-conference day for the CEU. Many alumni already teach these and may
do it for free. Distance-based might bring in additional money as a webinar.
Sean has talked with RCDE to get CEU’s for licensed LA’s. Sean will pursue it.
Do we know of anyone certified? Tony Bauer – reclamation
and bunnies.
Craig Johnson, master gardeners. Bugs
Dave Anderson – art works? Reserve Tippetts to show things from alums and faculty. Timmons has been
talking it up and all are excited.
Get Tippetts once the date is finalized. Library and New Ag building. Have it up for more than just
three days. Hook up with city too. Timmons – have a Scavenger hunt while alums are here and include
Art community?
Start including possible activities in our process. Jan will take a first look with Nancy and send it out.
Timmons has started a three day calendar will send to Jan.
Richard Toth recognition – kernel of idea but include several persons instead of just Toth. Roast Vern,
Craig, Michael and Richard?
Vern Budge - While talking with students tell them to look at InSites. Trying to get email addresses for
more alums.
Mailed letters to one for each class. Asked them to contact as many of their classmates as possible. Tell
about reunion and try to get emails.
Next meeting – May 10th at noon. Chris Sands, Cecile Gilmer will be invited by Dave Anderson.
Kathy will bring in lunch. Write Nancy to invite to come up if possible.
