We need research proving the effectiveness of Touch for Health and Energy Kinesiology. Thus
I have put together a protocol that looks at the relationship between quadriceps imbalance
and knee pain. Another form of research involves attempting to get clarity where confusion
exists: here we’ll consider neurolymphatic reflexes for the peroneus muscle test; and the
contralateral gait. I invite all of you to use the three protocols and I would love to have you
decide to pool your results.
The Quadriceps and Knee Pain
Background
As people in the Western world get older, knee problems become more common. Researchers
have also noticed a general weakening of the quadriceps muscle. But which occurs first? Is it
knee problems, then loss of integrity in the quadriceps muscles, or loss of integrity in the
muscles followed by knee problems? Researchers1 from Indianapolis in the United States
have concluded that the quadriceps problems occur first.
As people get older it becomes more difficult to get out of chairs – a primary function of the
quadriceps muscles. The quadriceps muscles also determine the placement of the knee cap
relative to the knee joint. All four parts of the muscle need to be balanced to avoid undue
wear and tear of the underlying knee joint. Is much of the osteoarthritis we see in older
people a result of imbalance in the quadriceps? Let’s find out!
Rectus femoris flexes the hip; all four parts of the quadriceps group are involved in leg
extension. However, the leg extension aspect of the Touch for Health test (pushing
backwards on the lower leg) might pick up imbalance in vastus intermedius but often misses
imbalances in the vastus lateralis and the vastus medialis. These two need to have equal
tension to hold the knee cap in place. If one becomes hypotonic, the other often becomes
hypertonic. Circuit locating, as in Biokinesiology, allows us to determine imbalances in any of
the four parts of the quadriceps muscle and their tendons.

Suggested Protocol
A. First Session
1. Take client history.
a) Where is their knee pain?
b) What is their current level of discomfort on a scale from 0-10 where 0 = ‘no pain’ and 10 =
‘severe’?
c) What is the range of discomfort experienced? [e.g. 0-8 would mean that sometimes the
discomfort is absent, and 8 would be the maximum discomfort experienced.]
d) Get a description of the areal extent of the pain. Get the client to draw, on a diagram of
the body that you provide, where they experience their pain.
e) What is the cause of the pain, if they know it?
f) How does the pain or discomfort interfere with their life?
g) What will they be doing once all knee discomfort is gone? [If the client cannot answer this
question, the client may be experiencing massive reversal and/or psychological reversal or
there may be some ‘secondary gain’ going on. Note the lack of positive reasons for being free
of pain.]
h) Prechecks: Have client sit then arise from the chair, walk up and down stairs, walk across
the room and back, etc. Look for any evidences of impaired function. Ask them for their
feedback. During which activities did they experience pain or restricted movement? Note their
responses.
2. Muscle monitor all four of the quadriceps muscles bilaterally and note any imbalances,
hypotonic or hypertonic. Circuit localise to determine whether muscle or tendon. [A locked
muscle which unlocks after you run a hand up the central meridian is said to be hypertonic.]
3. If more than one of the quadriceps muscles is out of balance, you may use priority mode
to determine where to begin the balancing, or just balance them without priority mode if
you prefer. Consider quadriceps metaphors.
4. Once all the quadriceps muscles have been balanced, get a reassessment from the client
as to any changes they notice. Re-examine range of movement, have client sit and then get
up out of a chair, walk up and down stairs if you have stairs available, etc., and ask them to
give you feedback. Observe changes.

(d) If the client couldn’t answer question 1 (g) and still has pain (or the pain returns),
check to see if they are experiencing psychological reversal. If so, correct.
6 Assign appropriate growth work such as biokinetic exercises or stimulation of specific
neurolymphatic points, holding of specific neurovascular points, if appropriate and note their
growth work.
B. Second Session
Repeat the assessment that was done at the first session and note the results.
a) If the pain has disappeared, note the successful outcome.
b) If the pain has diminished significantly and the quadriceps muscles are in balance, then
maybe more time is required for the healing of damaged tissues. Arrange to have the client
let you know when the pain is totally gone.
c) If there is still significant discomfort, repeat the quadriceps muscle monitoring. If they are
out of balance, rebalance them and make sure that the client has some relevant growth work
such as biokinetic exercises for some or all of the quadriceps muscles.
d) If there is still significant pain and the quadriceps muscles are all in balance, we can
assume that there are other muscles and/or tendons out of balance that are contributing to
the knee dysfunction. Muscle monitor the following and record your findings:

Peroneus Research Project
Gradually over the years we have seen more and more diversity in the location of the front
and back neurolymphatics for the peroneus muscle that we test in Touch for Health 1 classes,
as portrayed in Touch for Heath books by John Thie2,3, IKC-approved Touch for Health
manuals4,5 and in Applied Kinesiology books from David Walther6 and Robert Frost7. We have
three different locations on the pubic bone, four different locations near the navel and three
locations near Lumbar 5 on the back. It is unlikely that each of these is correct. Here is a very
simple protocol that should confirm the correct locations.
Whenever you find the Peroneus Tertius muscle test of Walther and Frost (the muscle test
we do in TFH) unlocking, get the client to place the palm of their hand over the pubic bone.
If the muscle now locks, have the client circuit localise the superior margin of the pubic bone
in the middle, the lateral aspect of the superior margin, and the inferior margin of the pubic
bone to find the exact NL reflex. Note your findings.
Then have the client place their palm over the navel. If the muscle locks, have the client
circuit localise in the navel, 2.5 cm lateral to the navel, 5 cm lateral to the navel, 2.5 cm
inferior to the navel and 5 cm inferior to the navel to find the exact NL reflex. Again note the
results.
Finally have the client place their palm over the L5 region of the spine. If the muscle locks,
have them circuit localise the prominent knobs (PSIS) on the hip bones level with L5,
between the transverse process of L5 and the sacrum, and between L5 and the PSIS. Again
note any findings. Once you have collected this data you may continue with your balance.
An individual doing this research could easily build in their own biases. However, if we had
hundreds of people collecting data from many clients, we could accumulate thousands of sets
of data. I would expect some of those peroneus neurolymphatic reflex locations to drop out
of consideration.
You would complete the data sheet for each person with one or more unlocking peroneus
muscles. Put these data sheets aside in a file then mail them to me towards the end of
January, 2015, or scan them into the computer and send them to me by email as
attachments. I would then collate the results and send you back our collective findings. What
could be simpler?

Gait Testing
Dr George Goodheart9 introduced four gait tests into Applied Kinesiology: Front, Lateral,
Posterior, and Contralateral. Walther6 has six gait tests to incorporate the research of Dr.
Alan Beardall10.
The Contralateral Gait Test: Much Confusion
There seems to be much confusion about the contralateral gait, many people now doing it as
an ipsilateral (same-sided) test. Goodheart’s inspiration for his research on gait testing is “the
excellent book, “Walking and Limping,” a study of normal and pathological walking, by
DuCroquet”. Let me quote directly from Goodheart (chapter 16, page 4):
They [the three Ducroquets] say, “It is the gluteus medius that maintains the relative
horizontality of the pelvis.” The lateral abdominal muscles of the opposite side act
on the gluteus medius in close synergy. It is the action performed by the two muscular
groups that permits the harmonious transfer at the thoracic center of gravity at
the frontal view. This horizontality of the pelvis is essential to both good movement,
and also to maintenance of good structural corrections following treatment.
Therefore , we test the gluteus medius against the opposite rectus and transversalis,
and this is done with the patient seated, and the patient attempts to press his right
knee, for example, against your knee, while you test the opposite, the left, rectus
abdominis, by placing your hand on his left knee and your hand on his shoulder,
attempting to test the rectus abdominis in the seated position. He exerts pressure
against your knee with his right knee, and many times the medius will test out well,
as will the left rectus against the right medius when tested individually, but when
tested simultaneously many times there will be a complete failure of resistance of
either the medius or the rectus abdominis.
Walther6 uses almost exactly the same wording as Goodheart to describe the Contralateral
Gluteus Medius and Abdominals gait test except that he says that gluteus medius is being
tested at the same time as the contralateral rectus abdominis and oblique abdominals as a
group. He has a photograph to accompany the description. The examiner is shown pushing
back on the forwardly rotated left shoulder while stabilising the patient’s left knee with their
right hand. Very likely someone has looked at the photograph, without reading the text, and
assumed that the quadriceps on the left (same side) was being tested. This has then caused
much subsequent confusion.

Research Suggestions
A. 1. Do a gait screening test by monitoring an indicator muscle while having your hand
over the five acupuncture points on the upper surface of the foot and your thumb over Kidney
1. If the IM unlocks, monitor each of the six gait tests with client lying face up.
P – Posterior - hip and shoulder extensors
Lying face up the client holds the extended left leg and the extended right arm down
while the facilitator attempts to pull them upwards. Repeat for the right leg and the
left arm.
A – Anterior – hip and shoulder flexors
L -- Lateral – hip and shoulder abductors
C -- Contralateral – gluteus medius and abdominals
Lying face up the client elevates their right shoulder (to activate their right rectus
abdominis and oblique abdominals) while the facilitator monitors client’s contralateral
left gluteus medius. Repeat for right gluteus medius and client’s contralateral left rectus
abdominis and oblique abdominals.
A – Adductors – hip and shoulder adductors
P – Psoas and Pectoralis Major
Lying on back client raises extended left leg and extended right arm into the psoas and
pectoralis major monitoring positions. Facilitator attempts to push the left leg down and
out and the right arm down and out. Repeat for the right leg and the left arm.
2. Switch on the relevant primary acupuncture points on the side of leg involvement by
brushing lightly over the points going away from the toes. Redo the gait screening test. If IM
locks, firmly massage the needed points for about 15 seconds.
3. Remonitor the specific gait tests and challenge each with the more mode. Then redo the
gait screening test and challenge it with the more mode. ‘More of the same’ would be more
stimulation of the acupuncture point. ‘More of something different’ might suggest that doing
the secondary acupuncture point would be beneficial. Lightly brush over the secondary point
to see if it would be beneficial.
Note: a gait screening test that still unlocks the IM might indicate that the supine versions of
the posterior and contralateral gait tests are not showing you the imbalance. Do these tests
face down and seated respectively.
B. For the Psoas / Pectoralis Major Gait test do some experimenting to determine
whether it is the pectoralis major clavicular or pectoralis major sternal that is more accurate.
C. Begin recording what you find when the shoulder component of the posterior gait (hip
and shoulder extensors) is out of balance. Is it triceps, posterior deltoid, teres major, teres
minor, etc.
D. When the Lateral gait is unlocking, brush lightly over Stomach 43 or 44 away from the
toes to see if test is now locked. Tap the point then brush lightly over the other point. Record
which one is needed.
E. When the Contralateral or Obliques gait test is unlocked, does Gallbladder 41 relock the
combination, or Gallbladder 42 or Gallbladder 43?

F. When the gait screening test unlocks the IM and Gallbladder 41 or 42 or 43 relocks it,
which of the several versions of the Contralateral gait test shows the imbalance?
Yes, there is much confusion regarding how to do the contralateral gait test (contralateral
gluteus medius and abdominals of Walther). If you are willing to begin tabulating your
findings and then when you have a significant number send them to Wayne Topping, I can
pool the results and see what emerges. You can be part of the solution!
