Control Measures to be Implemented
 COSHH assessments will be carried out if lamps are broken or crushed on site. During planning of works, especially
refurbishment, the quantities of waste fluorescent lamps will be estimated and disposal discussed with those in
control of the premises and the local Waste Disposal Officer.
 Fluorescent lamps will be treated as special waste and kept separate from other building waste. Where possible,
fluorescent lamps will be kept whole and intact, so as not to allow the escape of hazardous substances. If offpremises disposal has been arranged, a suitable storage area will be made available. Containers used for lamps
awaiting disposal are to be suitably marked. Appropriate PPE will be issued as determined by the COSHH
assessment, and may include eye and respiratory protection.
 If fluorescent lamps are stored in skips, management will ensure that contaminated water does not leak from skips.
COSHH control measures will be monitored where lamps are likely to be broken.
 All employees involved in handling, storage, maintenance and disposal of fluorescent lamps will be advised of the
hazards and required precautions.
Risk assessments and method statements are issued to all workers involved in the activity. This generic assessment
must be supplemented by a site specific risk assessment.
